Look up and you may soon see the skies above you filled with unfamiliar objects \u2013 at least if you live in the US. Delivery drones are on the cusp of becoming mainstream in America. They may soon be followed by electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOLs) aircraft, or flying taxis.<\/strong> Both revolutions promise improved efficiency, enhanced safety, environmental benefits and more, as we first noted<\/a> four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Begin with drones. Three major companies \u2013 Amazon, Wing and Zipline \u2013 are competing to dominate American skies, with each pursuing a different strategy. Amazon appears the most advanced, <\/strong>stating<\/strong><\/a> that its Prime Air service could reach 500 US cities and towns by the end of this year<\/strong>. It uses an MK30 drone<\/a>, which is large and technologically elaborate, even if some have described it as noisy. Should you live in the north of England, then Amazon is trialling<\/a> Prime Air in Darlington, where its drones will deliver packages weighing up to 2.2kg across a two-mile radius in under two hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wing (owned by Alphabet, the parent company of Google) has said that it expects<\/a> to be operating from more than 270 Walmart stores by 2027, reaching over 40m Americans<\/strong>. Its drones are smaller than those deployed by Amazon, being optimised for more frequent deliveries. Zipline is slightly further behind, but Uber (its major strategic partner) announced<\/a> last month that it is targeting 1m daily drone deliveries by the end of 2029<\/strong>, with initial services starting in 2026. Your next Uber Eats could be delivered by air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All three companies have asserted that their drones ought<\/a> to be no louder than a delivery truck or a standard household vacuum cleaner. However, people’s sensitivity to noise vary markedly and having a flying robot landing on your neighbour\u2019s patio may not please all. Safety and hence effective regulation clearly matter <\/strong>too. And if drones were not enough of a potential concern, imagine what might happen when flying taxis become more mainstream<\/strong>.
