Dollar-yen traded at 153.61 Wednesday morning in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pair fell nearly 5% in the week through Tuesday as investors rushed to unwind yen-funded carry trades following hawkish comments from Bank of Japan Governor&nbsp;<strong>Kazuo Ueda<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breaking below 155, a level the yen failed to breach even during the Japanese Ministry of Finance\u2019s record $73.6 billion intervention in May, encouraged traders to pile into bearish dollar positions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nomura\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>Graham Smallshaw<\/strong>&nbsp;told Bloomberg the macro community has shifted toward increasing yen shorts with 150 to 152 as the near-term target, while some longer-dated options reach as low as 140.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Matters for Bitcoin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stronger yen raises the cost of repayment for investors who borrowed yen cheaply to fund dollar-denominated positions including crypto.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, rising Japanese bond yields make yen assets more attractive, reducing the incentive to stay in the carry trade.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If both forces accelerate together, investors face forced liquidations across risk assets including&nbsp;<strong>Bitcoin<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/quote\/BTC-USD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(CRYPTO: BTC)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile,&nbsp;<strong>Stern Drew<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SternDrewCrypto\/status\/2097640059969368304\">flagged on X<\/a>&nbsp;that Bessent\u2019s comment is effectively a warning shot that Washington thinks it controls the next move in the US-Japan monetary dynamic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traders who fade the yen now risk getting hit by policy they cannot see coming, with the carry trade unwind potentially cascading through equities and crypto
