{"id":255685,"date":"2026-09-08T10:15:00","date_gmt":"2026-09-08T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=255685"},"modified":"2026-09-08T11:08:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-08T15:08:17","slug":"weekly-market-recap-week-of-september-7-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/weekly-market-recap-week-of-september-7-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekly Market Recap: Week of September 7, 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"h-the-week-in-review\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The week in review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>August unemployment remained at 4.1%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Non-farm payrolls increased to 162k.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-week-ahead\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The week ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CPI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PPI<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consumer sentiment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-thought-of-the-week\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Thought of the Week<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the surface, the U.S. labor market remains remarkably strong. The unemployment rate held at just 4.1% in August, lower than it has been 88% of the time over the past 50 years. Yet despite this apparent tightness, wage pressures continue to fade. Average hourly earnings rose just 3.1% over the past year, extending the slowdown in wage growth to its weakest pace in more than five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why, if the labor market remains so tight, aren\u2019t wages rising faster? One explanation may be that the labor market simply doesn\u2019t feel as strong as the unemployment rate suggests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Conference Board\u2019s consumer survey helps illustrate this disconnect. Historically, the spread between consumers saying jobs are \u201chard to get\u201d versus \u201cplentiful\u201d has moved closely with the unemployment rate. Today, however, perceptions of job availability look considerably weaker than the headline unemployment rate would imply. While unemployment remains historically low, consumers are increasingly reporting that jobs are harder to find. With hiring also subdued, workers may feel less confident about finding another job, reducing their leverage to negotiate higher pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For investors, subdued wage growth suggests the labor market is not generating meaningful inflationary pressure.
