Good to be here.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-0\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now,\u00a0you&#8217;ve\u00a0said professional performance comes from better decisions rather than more trade ideas. How does artificial intelligence help improve decision quality?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-0\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, most people think trading is about finding opportunities,\u00a0whereas\u00a0I think opportunities\u00a0are abundant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think there&#8217;s infinite opportunities in the market, and&nbsp;it&#8217;s&nbsp;part of the&nbsp;reason why&nbsp;I&#8217;ve&nbsp;been taking on traders and training them over my 20-year career. Professional traders&nbsp;don&#8217;t&nbsp;struggle because they&nbsp;can&#8217;t&nbsp;find&nbsp;trades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They struggle because they&nbsp;don&#8217;t&nbsp;consistently make good decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI&nbsp;doesn&#8217;t&nbsp;change the&nbsp;amount&nbsp;of opportunities in the markets, but it does improve the quality of the decisions we make around those opportunities, and&nbsp;that&#8217;s&nbsp;a very different&nbsp;use case.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-1\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you walk us through your morning routine and\u00a0show\u00a0where artificial intelligence fits into your market preparation process?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What, for example, are the first three prompts you would run every morning?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-1\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sure thing. With my coaching hat on, I call it my AM bookend, where I have a routine to get me into the right mindset before I even trade. I won&#8217;t go fully into it, but making sure you maybe have a walk, some breathing exercises, get your mind in motion, maybe a cold shower, grab a coffee, sit at your desk, start checking out your basics like your economic calendar, open positions, and then I start instructing AI.\u00a0So\u00a0the kind of prompts that\u00a0I&#8217;ll\u00a0then go to\u00a0AI with\u00a0after preparing myself as normal: prompt one, &#8220;Summarize the key macro drivers affecting the markets I trade today.&#8221; And you can fit in your markets there that I trade. It could be gold that\u00a0day,\u00a0it could be silver, could be\u00a0biotechs, whatever.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But\u00a0yeah, summarizing the key macro drivers affecting the market today would be prompt number one to warm me up. I put another after\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0gone through that. I always have a little opportunity to\u00a0learn in\u00a0there: &#8220;Based on the macro drivers, which markets deserve further research today?&#8221;\u00a0So\u00a0it might\u00a0bring up\u00a0some new markets that\u00a0aren&#8217;t\u00a0even on my radar.\u00a0And then if\u00a0there&#8217;s\u00a0something that I\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0understand, prompt number three comes up: &#8220;Explain any market that I don&#8217;t fully understand.&#8221;\u00a0So\u00a0I have that kind of holistic view of the markets, digging down a bit, and then researching them further if I fully\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0understand\u00a0a market, and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0very useful.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-2\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gotcha. Now, some people\u00a0go into\u00a0every day without a position, but most people do have a live portfolio. One of the more intriguing ideas is being able to ask questions directly about your account and positions. What are the most valuable portfolio questions investors should be asking?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-2\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u00a0have to\u00a0put your trader and asset manager hat on and then ask questions like, &#8220;Am I too exposed to one theme, one market sector?&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;What positions are maybe highly correlated?&#8221; is a good one. And then throwing some curveballs in there like, &#8220;If inflation surprises tomorrow, what positions are most vulnerable?&#8221;\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0kind of\u00a0the\u00a0professional mindset that you\u00a0wanna\u00a0use while\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0working with your AI agent.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-3\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You recommend asking AI to critique trade ideas rather than confirm them.\u00a0Why is that such a powerful mental shift?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-3\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;d\u00a0say\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0because AI will always tend to agree with you, so you want to\u00a0almost test\u00a0AI to disagree with you. A prompt that I like to use a lot is, &#8220;Could you take the opposite side of my trade and then convince me that I&#8217;m wrong?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-4\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what are the prompts investors can use to stress test their investment thesis before entering a trade?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-4\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as that, playing devil&#8217;s advocate and taking the opposite side of the trade, I think you can, rather than asking, &#8220;Will this trade work?&#8221; start asking, &#8220;How can I lose money out of this idea and this thesis?&#8221;\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0very much a proprietary trader or a professional trader&#8217;s approach.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-5\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So\u00a0a professional trader would often tell me that risk management matters more than forecasting. How can AI help investors become better risk managers?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, those devil&#8217;s advocate trades. You don&#8217;t want to be put off through your trading, but you do\u00a0wanna\u00a0understand all of the factors that could prove you wrong.\u00a0And then using that kind of AI research tool, as it were, to give you all the information available to make your decision as good as it can be.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-6\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What would you say the best prompts are for evaluating downside scenarios before entering a position?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-5\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;d\u00a0say contingency planning. &#8220;What should I be looking out for that could affect my trade when I&#8217;m in the trade?&#8221; I think.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What are the dangers of executing my trade now?&#8221; Because\u00a0timing&#8217;s\u00a0everything. You could have missed some data that was coming out, for example, before the trade&#8217;s being put on. AI agents are\u00a0very good\u00a0at telling us that. Before you get in, so anything that could damage you at the time\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0about to get in.\u00a0During the trade, &#8220;Are there any events, key events, that would affect the market price of the assets that I&#8217;m in while I&#8217;m in them?&#8221; And then looking to get out of the trade, &#8220;Are my stops reasonable? Is my\u00a0risk-reward\u00a0reasonable for the trade that\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0putting on?&#8221; And\u00a0maybe some\u00a0discussions about duration.\u00a0Testing, asking how long perhaps a duration of this trade should be.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-7\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something that struck me in the article that you wrote for Traders Insight was that you like to use AI to evaluate trading decisions afterwards. Why is post-trade analysis so important?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-6\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s\u00a0kind of the\u00a0crux of most of my teaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have a process that\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0used for years for myself and traders I&#8217;ve\u00a0taught:\u00a0identify\u00a0a trade, execute a trade, manage a trade, and evaluate a trade. And all four pillars are\u00a0very important. And that fourth pillar,\u00a0evaluate\u00a0a trade, is essentially where we have a motto, &#8220;Win or learn.&#8221;\u00a0&#8216;Cause\u00a0every trade gives you a lesson, even if you win or lose, and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0up to you to extract that lesson.\u00a0You can plug in\u00a0all of\u00a0your details for your trade and your thesis and your execution and the result, and then you can run simple tasks like, my basic evaluation is, &#8220;How could I have made more? How could I have lost less?&#8221; And then see what it\u00a0comes up with, see if it picks\u00a0out\u00a0any key bits of information that you can then\u00a0use for\u00a0next time when\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0running through your trade process.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-8\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does a great AI-assisted trade review look like?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-7\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0exactly that, really.\u00a0You&#8217;re\u00a0plugging in as much data as you can give it from your trade, your thesis, your execution parameters,\u00a0perhaps how\u00a0you were feeling while you were managing that trade.\u00a0That&#8217;s\u00a0a big one.\u00a0And once\u00a0you&#8217;ve\u00a0plugged all that in, again, going through those questions: &#8220;How could I have made more? How could I have lost less?&#8221; And some more growth mindset questions,\u00a0or,\u00a0&#8220;If I were to repeat this 100 times, this thesis and this entry execution scenario, would I succeed as a trader?&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things like this, trying to think a little bit out of the box when reviewing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-9\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Could artificial intelligence eventually become your personal trading coach? Is it\u00a0gonna\u00a0cost you your job, Sam?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-8\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, I\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0think so.\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0thought about that with a lot of technological advances over the years.\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0been in the\u00a0game\u00a020 years now. When I first started, they said algorithm trading was\u00a0gonna\u00a0destroy the point-and-click trader. But thanks to the likes of IBKR and retail trading, access has never been more available, really, so\u00a0there&#8217;s\u00a0more point-and-click traders than ever before.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So\u00a0with AI and coaching,\u00a0absolutely not.\u00a0There&#8217;s\u00a0not that human element, which is\u00a0very important, that empathy, psychology, judgment, experience. AI certainly helps. It helps me as a coach\u00a0and as\u00a0a trader. But at the end of the day,\u00a0you&#8217;ve\u00a0got to have that human in the loop, as we talk about a lot when we talk about AI.\u00a0It is only a tool at the end of the day. We\u00a0shouldn&#8217;t\u00a0really have it making the bulk of our important decisions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-10\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ve\u00a0posed your\u00a0initial\u00a0three questions about the macro situation and looking deeper into markets. Where do you go from there?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-9\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay.\u00a0So\u00a0we&#8217;ve got\u00a0our baseline.\u00a0We&#8217;ve\u00a0almost done a morning briefing.\u00a0We&#8217;ve\u00a0got to do the work of a team of\u00a0analysts, essentially.\u00a0So\u00a0we&#8217;ve\u00a0done an analysis, and then probably some ideas have come from that analysis, markets to\u00a0look into, doing\u00a0maybe a\u00a0bit more of a deep dive, running through our checklist.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m\u00a0a big believer of the trading checklist, and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0something that I use with\u00a0all of\u00a0my clients and students and junior traders, and I have done for years now myself.\u00a0So\u00a0I&#8217;ll\u00a0start running through\u00a0methodically my checklist, and it will help me out with parts of that checklist, be it the fundamentals, the technicals, seasonals.\u00a0And then\u00a0I&#8217;ll\u00a0kind of run\u00a0through that throughout the day through my trade process and plugging it into my checklist. The checklist then runs through the process to\u00a0identify, execute, manage, and\u00a0I&#8217;ll\u00a0be asking it questions throughout every trade process.\u00a0I&#8217;ll\u00a0also be\u00a0portfolio reviewing\u00a0throughout the day.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ll\u00a0have check-ins. I&#8217;ll have a check-in pre-European open, then pre-US open as standard, and then towards the European close to check my portfolio balancing and assessing the risk, really, if there&#8217;s anything I&#8217;ve missed, be it a macroeconomic risk or an imbalance. I get to challenge my ideas once\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0got trades on.\u00a0And then at the end of the day, I will then plug in my trade data and then ask for a comprehensive review. And then it&#8217;s a good back and forth, really, because if you&#8217;re asking AI the right questions, it normally opens up doors of curiosity that will lead you to ask more questions and find more knowledge, and that&#8217;s where AI agents are very good.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-11\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What capabilities do you believe investors will be using 12 months from now that seem\u00a0cutting\u00a0edge today?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-10\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think, well, number one, I\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0think AI is going to replace traders and us humans as decision-makers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think\u00a0that&#8217;s what&#8217;s\u00a0very important. But I do think that traders who use AI will outperform traders that don&#8217;t, and I think, depending on your ability and your understanding of how to trade in the right way, it&#8217;ll only enhance you if you use AI.\u00a0So\u00a0you&#8217;ve\u00a0gotta\u00a0have that baseline understanding, and\u00a0that&#8217;s\u00a0what&#8217;s\u00a0very important.\u00a0I think\u00a0that&#8217;s\u00a0what&#8217;s\u00a0missing in this technological leap,\u00a0is\u00a0a lot of people\u00a0haven&#8217;t\u00a0got much knowledge or process or the right way to trade, and\u00a0they&#8217;re\u00a0just jumping into AI.\u00a0It&#8217;s\u00a0those that are taking the time to learn trading, to understand trading, and then\u00a0filtering\u00a0in AI from there that are going to succeed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-andrew-wilkinson-12\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Andrew Wilkinson<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If any of our listeners are connecting their IBKR account to ChatGPT or Claude or other AI tools today, what are the three actionable things that they should do this week to become better traders?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-sam-baker-11\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sam Baker<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Okay. One of them is, I think\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0said it a few times, stop asking for predictions. Okay, that&#8217;s number one.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop asking things like, &#8220;Should I buy gold?&#8221; Okay, you&#8217;ve\u00a0gotta\u00a0get a bit deeper than that. Start using AI to improve your preparation. In my book,\u00a0<em>Learn to Trade Like a Professional<\/em>,\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0very much preparation, process, and then practice. So really dial it down to help you with that preparation.\u00a0And then ask AI to challenge your ideas, not to confirm them, so you can take the other side of that trade.
