{"id":251182,"date":"2026-07-23T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-23T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=251182"},"modified":"2026-07-23T11:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-23T15:32:13","slug":"ai-rebrands-great-for-the-hype-less-so-for-the-long-haul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/ai-rebrands-great-for-the-hype-less-so-for-the-long-haul\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Rebrands: Great For The Hype, Less So For The Long Haul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s a little &#8220;AI washing&#8221; between friends, right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The market loves a hot&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/trend\">trend<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 and AI is its latest obsession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2023, at least 28 US-listed companies have rebranded or pivoted toward AI, hoping a little of the tech&#8217;s sparkle would rub off on their share prices. And that often happened, at least first. At their peaks after rebranding, those companies were worth a combined $8.7 billion more than they had been the week before \u2013 a whopping 106% jump in market value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trouble is, the magic wears off. More than half those gains have since disappeared, and seven of the companies are now worth less than they were before their AI makeover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s not entirely surprising. Many of the businesses making the switch were already struggling, with several micro-cap companies using AI branding as a life raft rather than as a reflection of any real business transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are exceptions, though. Former crypto miners such as&nbsp;<strong>Cipher Digital<\/strong>&nbsp;have made a more convincing move into AI infrastructure, where demand from hyperscalers offers a clearer commercial case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole thing has a familiar ring to it. During the dotcom boom, companies discovered that adding &#8220;.com&#8221; to their names could send their shares flying. The crypto craze produced the same results \u2013 for a while, anyway. Eventually, the focus turns back to a company&#8217;s fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regulators are watching more closely now, too: the SEC has stepped up enforcement against &#8220;AI washing&#8221;, warning companies against exaggerating their AI credentials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ultimately, investors may reward genuine AI businesses \u2013 but a shiny new name alone isn&#8217;t enough to sustain a higher valuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\"
