The best investors don\u2019t just review updates from the companies they own \u2013 they also scan numbers from rivals, suppliers, and customers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When a company you\u2019re tracking drops its latest update, upload it all \u2013 press release, earnings presentation, quarterly financial report, news articles, and earnings conference call transcript \u2013 to NotebookLLM.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use specific prompts to go beyond basic summaries. AI can compare quarterly reports to spot subtle changes, evaluate industry implications, analyze management&#8217;s sentiment on calls, and critically examine how the latest results support or challenge your investment thesis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wall Street banks officially kick off the second-quarter earnings season this week, with results starting to roll in one after another. If you invest in individual&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/stock\">stocks<\/a>, you\u2019ll know that combing through every report and listening to every conference call can eat up serious time. The best investors don\u2019t just go over updates from the companies they own \u2013 they also scan the numbers from rivals, suppliers, and customers. That\u2019s a lot of ground to cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, in the age of AI, it\u2019s about working smarter, not harder. And I\u2019ve personally been using AI quite a lot to help me stay on top of it all. So here\u2019s my step-by-step workflow, using one of my favorite tools to analyze specific earnings releases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-step-1-gather-all-the-necessary-files\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 1: Gather all the necessary files.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a company you\u2019re tracking drops its latest update, the first step is to collect all the key information and files. Below is a checklist of what exactly to gather, with examples of each from US chipmaker&nbsp;<strong>Intel<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 URL to the&nbsp;<strong>press release<\/strong>&nbsp;itself (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intc.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/1767\/intel-reports-first-quarter-2026-financial-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">example<\/a>). Not all companies provide this, but when they do, it\u2019s often packed with great visuals and key takeaways. In the US, this is referred to as \u201cForm 10-Q\u201d. Choose articles that compare the company\u2019s results and future guidance against analyst estimates. Possible sources: CNBC, FT, The Wall Street Journal, Reuters, Bloomberg, Finimize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2705 URL or PDF of the&nbsp;<strong>earnings conference call<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>transcript<\/strong>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/INTC\/earnings\/INTC-Q1-2026-earnings_call-544934.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">example<\/a>). If you can\u2019t find the transcript, an audio recording is perfectly fine \u2013 modern AI models are \u201cmultimodal,\u201d meaning they can analyze not just text, but also audio, video, and images. Possible sources:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/news\/transcripts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Investing.com<\/a>, the company\u2019s investor relations site for audio recordings (<a href=\"https:\/\/edge.media-server.com\/mmc\/p\/n7sfbnqr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">example<\/a>), or YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-step-2-upload-everything-to-notebooklm\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 2: Upload everything to NotebookLM.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NotebookLM<\/strong>&nbsp;is an AI-powered research and note-taking tool from Google that works like a personal research assistant. It lets you upload a variety of sources \u2013 PDFs, Google Docs or Slides, website URLs, audio files, and even YouTube videos. Unlike typical AI chatbots, NotebookLM grounds all its responses in the content you provide, making it ideal for summarizing complex documents, answering targeted questions, and more \u2013 without a lot of hallucinations. Each notebook can hold up to 50 different sources, and the AI\u2019s long \u201ccontext window\u201d means it can process and analyze huge amounts of data with ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this makes NotebookLM an excellent tool for analyzing all the earnings-related material you gathered in the previous step. To get started, open the tool (here\u2019s the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/notebooklm.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link<\/a>), sign in with your Google account, then click on the \u201c+ Create new notebook\u201d button to create a notebook. Next, you\u2019ll be asked to upload your sources. You can drag and drop all the PDFs (and the audio file if you\u2019ve got one). You\u2019ll also see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/options\">options<\/a>&nbsp;to add URLs (for the news articles) and links to YouTube videos. Once it\u2019s all uploaded, you\u2019re ready to move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-step-3-generate-overviews-and-ask-smart-questions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step 3: Generate overviews and ask smart questions.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First things first, before you even start asking clever questions, you can use NotebookLM\u2019s built-in features to get solid summaries of the company\u2019s earnings announcement. That\u2019s especially handy if you\u2019re tracking a lot of stocks but are short on time. In the top-right corner, you\u2019ll find options for an \u201cAudio Overview\u201d, \u201cVideo Overview\u201d, or \u201cBriefing Doc\u201d (under \u201cReports\u201d) \u2013 each one condensing your uploads into a podcast, video presentation, or tidy text summary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once that\u2019s done, it\u2019s time to dig in. These are my top prompts for smartly analyzing a company\u2019s latest update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>1) Summarize the key figures and takeaways from [company name]\u2019s latest results and outlook. Organize your response into two clearly labeled lists: Positives and Negatives, focusing on only the most significant and impactful points.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>2) Based on [company name]\u2019s latest results and outlook, identify the most important implications for the broader industry, highlighting trends, risks, and opportunities.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can make this even more specific by asking about the implications for a particular company you\u2019re interested in, such as a key supplier or customer. In my Intel example, I might ask about the implications for&nbsp;<strong>ASML<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 a major supplier of chipmaking equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>3) Comparing [company name]\u2019s two most recent quarterly financial reports, what are the top ten qualitative things that changed from the 1Q26 one to the 2Q26?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two quick notes on this. First, \u201c1Q26\u201d and \u201c2Q26\u201d are just examples \u2013 be sure to update them to the quarter and year you\u2019re interested in. Second, when running this prompt, I recommend deselecting all sources in the left-hand panel of NotebookLM, except for the two quarterly financial reports in question. This makes sure the tool compares only those two documents and nothing else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This prompt is great at spotting key changes from one update to the next \u2013 details that analysts might easily overlook in quarterly reports that can run hundreds of pages. Examples include subtle shifts in accounting methods (e.g. tech firms extending the useful life of data centers to reduce depreciation costs), the addition or removal of a key risk, and lots more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>4) Below is my investment thesis for owning [company name]\u2019s stock. Using the firm\u2019s latest results and outlook, identify:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The key points that support and strengthen my thesis.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The key points that challenge or weaken my thesis.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>For each point:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Be specific, citing relevant figures, metrics, or statements.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Indicate whether the impact is short-term, long-term, or both.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Briefly explain the reasoning behind your assessment.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>[And here, I\u2019d insert my investment thesis]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>5) Analyze the language and sentiment of the management team during the conference call. Distinguish between their prepared remarks and their answers during the Q&amp;A session. Do they seem confident, cautious, or defensive?
