He learned about everything from space exploration to sound (meeting Spotify) and memory (chips) to money. Across 12 management meetings, five of which were with C-suite executives, the dominant takeaway was that&nbsp;<strong>everything is being digitised and transformed rapidly by AI<\/strong>, even sectors as traditional as building materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were&nbsp;<strong>marked variations across the trip, both in terms of economic optimism and views on how the Iran war may affect the outlook<\/strong>, as well as in temperature. The mercury traversed a 20-degree range, with Central Park seeing both sun and snow. Nobody could explain the sudden shift in the weather, just as predicting the course for the global economy is inevitably complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below follow our key insights, sorted alphabetically by theme for simplicity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI:\u00a0<\/strong>Almost every business we met stressed the importance of their\u00a0<strong>proprietary data sets<\/strong>, and how these are being leveraged in an increasingly AI-driven world to deepen competitive differentiation. \u201cAI is being infused into almost all our products,\u201d one executive told us. A second major focus was on\u00a0<strong>AI as a cost-cutting tool<\/strong>, used to \u201cdrive efficiency,\u201d \u201creinvent how we work internally\u201d and \u201cprune low hanging fruit.\u201d Confidence is high. Investors will now want to see these benefits reflected in reported earnings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agentic commerce:\u00a0<\/strong>There was no shortage of excitement about the\u00a0<em>potential\u00a0<\/em>for agents to transact on the part of consumers, although executives cautioned that it is\u00a0<strong>\u201cstill early days\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0and that\u00a0<strong>\u201cconsumers lacked confidence\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0particularly around trust, security and dispute resolution. Unsurprisingly, payment processing incumbents believe they are well positioned to benefit. Arguably the biggest near-term winners could be the owners of industrial real estate: more agents imply more e-commerce, and more e-commerce requires warehouse space.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data centre build:\u00a0<\/strong>Hyperscalers \u201ccan\u2019t deploy capital quickly enough,\u201d according to one critical components supplier. If they fail to do so, \u201cthe marginal Dollar will go to your rival.\u201d Build continues apace, although challenges may emerge towards the end of the decade<strong>. Secured power agreements currently only extend out to 2028.\u00a0<\/strong>More encouragingly,\u00a0<strong>discussions around accelerating permitting (for new builds) are becoming a \u201cbipartisan issue,\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>we were told.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Quantum computing:\u00a0<\/strong>The tone of debate has shifted meaningfully over the last 12 months. Quantum is becoming increasingly a reality, with the challenge now \u201cless about physics and more about engineering scale-up.\u201d\u00a0<strong>Commercial quantum could emerge around 2029.\u00a0<\/strong>The potential value accretion is viewed \u201cso large\u201d that \u201cadoption won\u2019t be an issue.\u201d Further, the scale of the opportunity reduces near-term concerns around winner-takes-all dynamics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space:\u00a0<\/strong>A highly topical conversation given current military conflict. There is\u00a0<strong>\u201ca ton of opportunity in defence<\/strong>,<strong>\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as the Finance Director of a major player put it. Governments globally are allocating additional budget to space, increasingly seen as the next strategic frontier.
