Ask anyone about the future and the conversation is likely to come around to AI before not long. If anything, the key debates about its additive versus destructive potential have only\u00a0intensified<\/em>\u00a0as the technology itself has advanced (note, this piece was edited by Copilot). We have highlighted\u00a0recently<\/a>\u00a0in our own work the\u00a0huge sums of money being committed to data centre builds<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0also<\/a>\u00a0the reality that\u00a0behind every algorithm lies a set of human choices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what do people\u00a0really\u00a0<\/em>feel about AI? We have\u00a0long been fans of \u201cThe Future 100<\/a>\u201d an annual document published by creative consultancy\u00a0VML<\/a>. The agency set out to answer this question by interviewing consumers across 16 countries. Our reading of the findings is straightforward:\u00a0people appear both excited and confused about AI, and do not yet understand its full societal impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost three-quarters of respondents believe that \u201ctechnology can make the world a better place\u201d yet a similar proportion feel \u201cwe are rushing into using AI without thinking through the consequences.\u201d <\/strong>Both these statements can of course be true at the same time. While 58% say they \u201ctrust AI to act in the best interests of humanity\u201d, an even larger share believe that \u201cAI is making it impossible to understand what is true in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have\u00a0long argued <\/a>that\u00a0no new technology should ever be thought of as a panacea<\/strong>.\u00a0AI is best understood as being a tool: a means to an end, enhancing productivity and augmenting human potential<\/strong>, albeit in very powerful ways. 81% of respondents say AI has helped them create content they otherwise couldn\u2019t have made. We do, however, worry for the 37% of people polled who \u201ccan see themselves falling in love with an AI companion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
