Airports are rarely pleasant places to visit, as your author can attest having passed through London\u2019s Heathrow twice recently. Listen to Adam Goldstein, the Founder and Chief Executive of Archer Aviation<\/a>, and you will hear a vision for what the aircraft of the future may resemble. In our third interaction with Archer\u2019s senior management over the last six months (read more here<\/a>) we learned how Archer is \u201chelping to build a new category.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adam described his business as operating \u201cflying cars.\u201d We first made the case for electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles <\/strong>(eVTOLs) in our 2022 thematic work<\/a>. Since then, the industry has evolved rapidly. Trials are underway in several locations around the world. The potential is significant: imagine getting from a major airport such as New York\u2019s JFK to downtown Manhattan in perhaps not much more than five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This vision may, of course, take some time to arrive. Archer has been selected<\/a> as the official air taxi provider for the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. Seeing eVTOLs in action will be \u201cimportant,\u201d says Archer as it will help people get more \u201ccomfortable\u201d with the idea<\/strong>. Rest assured, flying taxis will likely be piloted for \u201cup to ten years,\u201d rather than operating autonomously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its build-out plans ahead of the Olympics, Archer recently announced<\/a> that it had completed the first phase of its acquisition of Hawthorne airport. Consider this the template for the \u201cairport of the future.\u201d Located less than three miles from LAX (Los Angeles\u2019 principal airport), Hawthorne\u2019s location is strategic and close to many of the city\u2019s biggest attractions such as the SoFi Stadium, as well as downtown. The airport\u2019s existing infrastructure<\/strong> and location<\/strong> are significant as is the scope for it to be utilised as an \u201cinnovation test bed.\u201d<\/strong> Imagine a world where AI may one day power air traffic control and ground operations<\/strong>, speeding up the frustrations many experience at airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
