{"id":239406,"date":"2026-02-23T11:00:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T16:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=239406"},"modified":"2026-02-24T02:51:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T07:51:24","slug":"us-economic-growth-slowed-but-investors-were-distracted-by-other-happenings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/us-economic-growth-slowed-but-investors-were-distracted-by-other-happenings\/","title":{"rendered":"US Economic Growth Slowed, But Investors Were Distracted By Other Happenings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The US just dealt a one-two punch: economic growth slowed by more than feared, and inflation came in higher than expected<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on-here\"><strong>What\u2019s going on here?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>US economic growth slowed more than feared last quarter,&nbsp;but a Supreme Court ruling \u2013 and a fresh presidential&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2024654469745480105?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">post<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 was more than enough to distract investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\"><strong>What does this mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>America\u2019s economy only grew by an annualized 1.4% last quarter from the one before. That\u2019s miles below both the 2.2% that economists expected and the previous quarter\u2019s 4.4% growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25b6 The biggest sucker punch came from the government shutdown, which lopped off a full percentage point. That kind of disruption is temporary, though, so investors largely shrugged off the lackluster figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25b6 Their attention was probably being pulled elsewhere, anyway: the US Supreme Court just&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/20\/politics\/supreme-court-tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deemed<\/a>&nbsp;the president\u2019s sweeping tariffs illegal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\"><strong>Why should I care?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Zooming in:<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;<em>The Fed can\u2019t win for losing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federal Reserve\u2019s (Fed\u2019s) favorite&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/inflation\">inflation<\/a>&nbsp;gauge showed prices rose 0.4% in December from November, the quickest monthly pace in almost a year. On a yearly basis, inflation came in at 3% \u2013 still a clear notch above the central bank\u2019s 2% target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25b6 That leaves the Fed in a bind. See, even if you take out the impact of the government shutdown, economic growth slowed \u2013 despite investors\u2019 nonchalance. And that calls for lower&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/interest\">interest<\/a>&nbsp;rates, while stubborn inflation argues for the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>The bigger picture:<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;<em>The few, not the many.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The richest 10% of Americans now make up&nbsp;<em>half<\/em>&nbsp;of all US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/consumer\">consumer<\/a>&nbsp;spending \u2013 the biggest slice on record. That\u2019s largely because they\u2019re more likely to own stocks and property, so their overall wealth swells as share and home prices pick up. All while lower-income households spend less, work more,&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;borrow money to keep their heads above water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25b6 That\u2019s led to today\u2019s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/app.finimize.com\/content\/how-to-invest-in-a-k-shaped-economy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">K-shaped<\/a>&#8221; economy, which leans heavily on the spending of the wealthiest few.
