It doesn\u2019t seem to be interested in becoming one of the <strong>hyperscalers<\/strong> \u2014 big cloud providers pouring money in data centers and high-end chips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-ai-demands-so-much-hardware\"><strong>Why AI Demands So Much Hardware<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Behind every generative model is physical infrastructure that is expanding faster than most forecasts anticipated. Training and running AI systems requires:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>GPUs and CPUs<\/strong>, the core engines of AI computation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data centers<\/strong>, which must grow in both size and density.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Networking upgrades<\/strong>, to move ever\u2011larger datasets efficiently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Microsoft disclosed that two\u2011thirds of its record capex last quarter went into \u201c<em>short\u2011lived assets<\/em>\u201d \u2014 mainly Nvidia\u2019s chips. These components depreciate quickly, meaning the <strong>spending cycle is not only large but continuous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The industry is also running into real\u2011world constraints. Data centers already consume roughly <strong>1.5% of global electricity<\/strong>, and demand is rising. Power availability, land use, and water consumption are becoming limiting factors in several regions. Even with cleaner energy sources, growth may slow unless operators redesign facilities or secure new power deals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This pressure is driving more experimental ideas too. Elon Musk\u2019s <strong>SpaceX\u2013xAI merger<\/strong> aims to explore orbital data centers, while others are betting on breakthroughs like <strong>fusion power <\/strong>to keep future AI systems running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether these materialize or not, they highlight the scale of the challenge: AI\u2019s growth is colliding with physical limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-software-feels-the-shockwaves\"><strong>Software Feels the Shockwaves<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the deep-pocketed tech giants accelerate spending on hardware and infrastructure, the biggest plunges are happening amid software companies that can\u2019t afford or don\u2019t want to become hyperscalers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The S&amp;P 500 Software Index has fallen more than 18% since the start of 2026, with business and legal software firms hit particularly hard. A recent catalyst was <strong>Anthropic<\/strong>\u2019s expansion of Claude Cowork, which introduced plugins capable of automating tasks across legal, sales, marketing, and data analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US-listed companies like <strong>ServiceNow<\/strong>, <strong>Thomson Reuters<\/strong>, <strong>Oracle<\/strong>, <strong>Figma<\/strong>, and <strong>Atlassian<\/strong> have seen sharp declines. In Europe, names like <strong>SAP<\/strong>, <strong>LSEG<\/strong>, and <strong>Capgemini<\/strong> are under pressure. Investors are questioning whether traditional software models can maintain pricing power when AI tools increasingly automate the workflows they sell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ai-s-expensive-future\"><strong>AI&#8217;s Expensive Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment, the AI boom doesn\u2019t seem to be about who builds the smartest model (there\u2019s a new favorite out every few months), but who can afford the infrastructure to keep those models running.
