target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testimony before Congress<\/a>, relating to its building renovation costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-these-are-just-pretexts\">These Are Just \u2018Pretexts\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This marks a major escalation in tensions between President&nbsp;<strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&nbsp;and the central bank, following months of relentless attacks for not cutting rates aggressively, and repeated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/news\/25\/04\/44882256\/trumps-threat-to-fire-powell-could-shake-us-financial-markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">calls for Powell\u2019s removal<\/a>, undermining the independence of the Federal Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his statement, Powell said the Fed&#8217;s&nbsp;<a centers on control of U.S. monetary policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have deep respect for the rule of law and for accountability in our democracy,\u201d Powell said, adding that this \u201cunprecedented action\u201d should be viewed in the context of the administration\u2019s growing threats and pressure in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powell warned that the \u201cthreat of criminal charges\u201d is simply a \u201cconsequence\u201d of the Fed setting interest rates \u201cbased on our best assessment of what will serve the public,\u201d rather than following the \u201cpreferences of the President.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the confrontation ultimately centers on whether the Federal Reserve can continue making decisions \u201cbased on evidence and economic conditions,\u201d or whether U.S. monetary policy will instead be shaped by \u201cpolitical pressure or intimidation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Powell concluded by saying that he has served under multiple administrations and remains committed to his role. \u201cI will continue to do the job the Senate confirmed me to do, with integrity and a commitment to serving the American people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gold-silver-futures-rally-stocks-drop\">Gold, Silver Futures Rally, Stocks Drop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mounting threat to the Federal Reserve&#8217;s independence is driving investors toward hard assets, with gold and silver futures rallying in the wake of this development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gold futures for February delivery are up 1.95%, at $4,588.29 per ounce, while Silver futures for March delivery are up 5.14%, trading at $83.360 per ounce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, stock futures are in the red, with Dow Jones futures down 0.44%, trading at 49,505, Nasdaq futures down 0.71%, at 25,755 points, and the S&amp;P 500 down 0.47%, trading at 6,972<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
