{"id":233299,"date":"2025-10-24T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-24T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=233299"},"modified":"2025-10-27T03:57:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T07:57:30","slug":"bubble-bubble-oils-in-trouble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/bubble-bubble-oils-in-trouble\/","title":{"rendered":"Bubble Bubble, Oil\u2019s In Trouble"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The US and Europe tightened sanctions on Russia\u2019s biggest energy firms, and investors made sure oil prices felt the squeeze<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on-here\"><strong>What\u2019s going on here?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The US and European Union placed new sanctions on Russia\u2019s biggest energy companies this week, summoning a stir in the world\u2019s oil market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\"><strong>What does this mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The US sanctioned Russia\u2019s top oil producers,&nbsp;<strong>Rosneft<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Lukoil<\/strong>, stopping them from accessing the stateside financial system \u2013&nbsp;think banks or dollar-denominated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/asset\">assets<\/a>. And it\u2019s willing to extend the punishment, saying any foreign firm still dealing with the twosome could face secondary sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe followed with restrictions of its own. It blocked Russia from exporting liquified natural gas to the region from 2027 and banned transactions with five of the country\u2019s banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25b6 That leaves China and India in a bind. They\u2019re the country\u2019s biggest customers: together, they buy more than three million barrels of Russian crude oil a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\"><strong>Why should I care?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Zooming in:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Not everything\u2019s bigger in Texas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The International Energy Agency expects supply of oil to outstrip demand by nearly four million barrels a day next year. All else equal, that will keep a cap on prices \u2013&nbsp;and it\u2019s already limited investors\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finimize.com\/glossary\/interest\">interest<\/a>&nbsp;levels, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd3b Case in point: the energy sector has only managed a meager 6% climb this year, making it one of the S&amp;P 500\u2019s weakest performers. And, even after today\u2019s 5% uplift,&nbsp;<strong>West Texas Intermediate crude oil<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;a benchmark price for the slippery stuff \u2013&nbsp;is down some 15% since the start of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Zooming out:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Solid gold.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Liquid gold might be out of favor, but the real stuff isn\u2019t. Gold prices have been pushed up by over 50% this year, coming close to a record price. Investors and central banks have both stockpiled the shiny stuff, hoping that the famously stable asset could protect them from financial shocks \u2013&nbsp;a result of, say, political shifts or more
