A lot of my advice boils down to trading is hard, so go after the easiest stuff you can find first.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the answer is slow and steady.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I were trying to make friends, rather than give you good advice, I would say this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have a small trading account, you can do really high-performing, low-capacity stuff. There are trades in crypto futures, and there are opportunities in constrained equity trades, where you can get very high risk-adjusted performance. And that\u2019s because those opportunities aren\u2019t really big enough for more sophisticated traders to be interested in. So let\u2019s go after these really niche, constrained things.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there\u2019s a catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those trades are tough.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They require more skill, more time, and often more technology than a beginner has at their disposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s like trying to run before you can crawl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what\u2019s the alternative?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with the easy stuff.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m talking about strategies that might not set the world on fire with their returns, but are forgiving enough to let you learn the ropes without blowing up your account or destroying your mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think of it like this: on one end of the spectrum, you\u2019ve got high-skill, high-return strategies. On the other, you\u2019ve got lower-skill, more modest return strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do you think you should start?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you said \u201chigh-skill, high-return\u201d, I admire your ambition. But let\u2019s be real \u2013 you\u2019re setting yourself up for a world of pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, focus on the easier end of the spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it\u2019s about building confidence, not screwing up, and learning to run processes consistently<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s a real-world example: Risk premia harvesting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s not sexy, but it\u2019s a solid strategy that\u2019s been providing a tailwind to macro traders for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And guess what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can start doing it today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I know what you\u2019re thinking. \u201cBut I want those juicy returns!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I get it. But don\u2019t worry \u2013 those high-return strategies aren\u2019t going anywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019ll still be there when you\u2019re ready for them. And trust me, you\u2019ll be much better equipped to handle them after you\u2019ve cut your teeth on the simpler stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what kind of returns can you expect from these simpler strategies?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s talk Sharpe ratios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a single risk premium harvesting approach, you\u2019re looking at about 0.5 to 1. In plain English, that means your returns will be about half your volatility, or a bit more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re smart about it and combine a few of these strategies, you could potentially bump that up to a Sharpe ratio of 1 \u2013 meaning your returns roughly equal your volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I know that might not sound earth-shattering. But here\u2019s the kicker \u2013 you could potentially manage this kind of portfolio with just a monthly check-in. Try doing that with high-frequency crypto arbs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you build your skills and confidence, you can start venturing into more complex territory. Those constrained trades with Sharpe ratios of 4 or 5? They\u2019re not going anywhere. But by the time you get to them, you\u2019ll have the skills to actually capitalise on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, trading isn\u2019t a sprint \u2013 it\u2019s a marathon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
