{"id":227692,"date":"2025-07-22T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-22T16:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=227692"},"modified":"2025-07-22T13:55:44","modified_gmt":"2025-07-22T17:55:44","slug":"return-of-the-memes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/return-of-the-memes\/","title":{"rendered":"Return of the Memes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I\u2019m sure there is a shopping center somewhere that hosts locations of both GameStop (GME) and Kohl\u2019s (KSS).&nbsp; I\u2019d love to know where that might be, because it seems that some GME shoppers moved across the parking lot to KSS recently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not every day that we see a stock more than double on scant news, but that was the case with KSS this morning.&nbsp; I received plenty of questions as the stock zoomed in the pre-market, especially because there was no obvious story that might justify a huge rally.&nbsp; Indeed, a major firm upgraded its price target for KSS from $5 to $7, but since the stock closed above $10 yesterday, that would have little, if any impact.&nbsp; Instead, there was a plethora of bullish social media chatter, most of it focused upon KSS\u2019 heavy short interest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, KSS showed a short interest of about 53 million shares in the most recent report, as of June 30th.&nbsp; That\u2019s quite substantial to say the least.&nbsp; While it is below the peak 57 million in the May 15<sup>th<\/sup> report, it still represents about 7X KSS\u2019 average daily volume and just over 49% of the stock\u2019s float.&nbsp; In other words, about half the available KSS shares have been sold short.&nbsp; Social media chatter seized upon that factor in recent days, and it metastasized into a huge move this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this sounds at all familiar, a short squeeze was a key factor in igniting the GME frenzy of 2021.&nbsp; That said, the 50% short interest in KSS pales in comparison to the most extreme levels reached in GME \u2013 roughly 144%!&nbsp; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/gamestop-showed-short-interest-float-how-could-that-be\/?query=GME%20short%20interest&amp;query_id=HlwH9t6jTvKYQ59Er9GT8w&amp;index=engine-name-placeholder&amp;user_token=HlwH9t6jTvKYQ59Er9GT8w\">We explained in detail<\/a> how that could occur in January 2021).&nbsp; However, we see that KSS has been steadily rising since bottoming in April.&nbsp; We also saw options volume increasing in recent sessions.&nbsp; There was enough demand to get the stock to close a gap that was created in early March, and then off it went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kss-6-months-daily-candles\"><strong><em>KSS 6-Months, Daily Candles<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1100\" height=\"705\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/image-37-1100x705.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-227694 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/image-37-1100x705.png 1100w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/image-37-700x448.png 700w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/image-37-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/image-37-768x492.png 768w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/07\/image-37.png 1188w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1100px) 100vw, 1100px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1100px; aspect-ratio: 1100\/705;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Source: Interactive Brokers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the stock\u2019s recent resurgence, a longer-term chart shows KSS\u2019 relative demise since last autumn. Even this morning\u2019s brief doubling only brought it back to the levels that prevailed in October:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kss-1-year-daily-candles\"><strong><em>KSS heavily fueled by social media chatter.&nbsp; Stocks like Opendoor Technologies (OPEN), BitMine Inversion Technologies (BMNR), and Sharplink Gaming (SBET) have seen huge advances on high volume because of their ability to capture the public\u2019s imagination.&nbsp; And a feature of the current market environment is that once the public gets involved in a high volatility, high volume situation, these situations can persist with a life of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That last feature is reminiscent of the meme-stock era.&nbsp; So too were short-squeezes, abetted by heavy call option volume that created somewhat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/freaky-friday-another-spy-closing-ramp-or-gamma-squeeze\/?query=gamma%20squeeze&amp;query_id=CeZgvhUFQjmMzZk5OVTkYg&amp;index=engine-name-placeholder&amp;user_token=CeZgvhUFQjmMzZk5OVTkYg\">self-fulfilling gamma squeezes<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; But there are some differences.&nbsp; Much of the original meme craze was focused upon companies that offered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/gamestop-blackberry-and-nostalgia\/?query=nostalgia%20%20%20&amp;query_id=OswsLkvvQoSC1BbFG05wag&amp;index=engine-name-placeholder&amp;user_token=OswsLkvvQoSC1BbFG05wag\">nostalgia for traders<\/a> stuck at home during covid.&nbsp; Maybe some of today\u2019s buyers were nostalgic for KSS, but that doesn\u2019t seem particularly likely.&nbsp; Also, the moves in GME, AMC and others took on a manic life of their own; KSS\u2019 bounce doesn\u2019t seem as exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a cautionary element in the KSS situation, however.&nbsp; The shorts, while vulnerable to a painful and expensive squeeze, were there for a reason.&nbsp; Most of KSS\u2019 bonds are trading well below par.&nbsp; Remember, bond traders are only concerned with getting paid back in full, and the prices of KSS bonds tell us that there are serious doubts about that likelihood.&nbsp; And if bondholders don\u2019t get paid in full, there\u2019s nothing left for stockholders.&nbsp; The short sales might have been hedging bonds or credit default swaps based upon KSS.&nbsp; That trade made plenty of sense \u2013 until it didn\u2019t!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally
