Meta is set to spend $72 billion this year alone on \u201ctitan clusters\u201d: data centers the size of&nbsp;<em>Manhattan<\/em>. These massive, power-hungry facilities will need consistent rivers of electricity, stacks of high-end chips, and miles of internal copper wiring. The first one \u2013 nicknamed Prometheus \u2013 will go live next year, all going to plan. And when it does, that\u2019ll jumpstart a push toward so-called superintelligence: the next (somewhat terrifying) level of AI, where machines could actually outsmart us all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\"><strong>Why should I care?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-for-markets-nbsp-red-hot-metal\"><strong><em>For markets:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Red-hot metal.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta\u2019s mega-build is just one piece of the broader AI race. Tech giants are&nbsp;<em>all<\/em>&nbsp;scrambling to erect enormous server farms \u2013 each one packed with copper. See, the red metal is needed in huge quantities for wiring, cooling, and power management within these facilities. And that\u2019s where the job gets tricky. Copper prices in the US have been, err, surging: they\u2019re up 38% this year, fueled by tariffs and all of that demand. That\u2019s squeezing margins across the board \u2013 from AI labs to EVs \u2013 which could put a serious drag on Big Tech\u2019s stateside spending plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-zooming-out-nbsp-copper-s-a-showstopper\"><strong><em>Zooming out:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Copper\u2019s a showstopper.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The US is racing to build domestic supply chains, and copper is at the center of the action. With China dominating global smelting and almost half of US imports coming in already refined, investors might soon turn away from fancy silicon chips and toward the more rudimentary red metal.
