Someone sent me their trading technology blueprint. It was a thing of beauty: timeseries databases, Grafana dashboards, message queues, and all sorts of fancy architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My first question: \u201cWhat are you currently trading?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their answer: \u201cNothing yet. But I\u2019m planning a medium frequency stat arb basket trade.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I almost spat out my coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look, I get it. If you come from a tech background, building cool systems is fun. It feels productive. It feels like you\u2019re making progress toward your trading goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I\u2019m going to tell you something that might save you months of wasted effort:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not build technology you don\u2019t need yet!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is so important that I\u2019ll say it again, louder for the people in the back:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not build technology you don\u2019t need yet!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is painfully simple: you don\u2019t know what you need until you start trading. Full stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need market experience more than you need fancy infrastructure. Without some real market experience, you\u2019re just guessing about what problems you\u2019ll face and what tools you\u2019ll need to solve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opportunity cost kills<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While you\u2019re heads-down building a system that might solve problems you don\u2019t have yet, two terrible <\/strong><\/em>things are happening:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. You\u2019re not trading, which means you\u2019re not making money<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. You\u2019re not getting market feedback, which means you\u2019re not learning<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Both are catastrophic for your development as a trader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019ve seen traders spend months building elaborate systems before they ever place a trade (I was one of these traders).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then, when they finally do start trading, they realise that half their technology doesn\u2019t address the actual problems they\u2019re facing (again, I know this from experience).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A real-world example<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When we started trading crypto back in 2021, we thought we needed low-latency execution to trade basis spreads and arbitrage on centralised exchanges. We started designing systems for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But as we actually traded, we quickly realised that wasn\u2019t where our edge was. We pivoted to DeFi and ended up doing similar trades on Solana smart contracts, where the competition was less fierce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Here\u2019s the thing: when we first started, I didn\u2019t even know what Solana was! But because we prioritised trading from day one, we figured out where we could actually compete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Imagine if we\u2019d spent six months building low-latency execution infrastructure only to discover we had no edge there. That would have been six months of opportunity cost \u2013 no trading, no learning, no money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What to do instead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
      \n
    1. Start trading today with whatever you have.<\/strong> Use Excel if that\u2019s what you know. Use a free charting platform. Use manual execution, at least at the start; you\u2019ll learn a ton.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Solve real problems as they arise.<\/strong> When your manual process becomes too time-consuming or error-prone, that\u2019s when you build something to automate it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Prioritise tools that support what you\u2019re currently trading.<\/strong> If you\u2019re doing end-of-day trades on ETFs, you don\u2019t need millisecond-level data infrastructure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Be flexible.<\/strong> Your understanding of what you need will evolve rapidly as you gain market experience.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Ask yourself: what can I be doing right now\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • With my existing technology (even if it\u2019s just Excel)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • That is likely to make money<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • That won\u2019t consume all my time, so I can gradually build better tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • And is somewhat aligned with my long-term vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        This is an iterative process, not a linear one. You\u2019re doing the best you can to make money today while gradually building toward your future vision, a vision that will itself evolve as you learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Start simple and obvious<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        At the beginning, prioritise trading simple, obvious edges that don\u2019t require complex technology:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          \n
        • Risk premia harvesting<\/strong> in liquid ETFs (literally just buying things that tend to be priced cheaper than their expected value due to risk)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Crypto basis trades<\/strong> between perpetual futures and spot (can be done manually at first)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Simple pairs trading,<\/strong> where you can find similar assets with mean-reverting spreads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          These edges won\u2019t make you rich overnight, but they\u2019ll get you in the game, generating both income and, more importantly, market feedback that will inform what you actually need to build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          Each of these trades will teach you specific lessons and naturally lead you to build tools that actually solve problems you\u2019re experiencing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            \n
          • Tools for position and risk management<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Tools for monitoring exposures across venues<\/li>\n\n\n\n
          • Simple execution helpers to reduce manual errors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

            Be a trader first and foremost. Only build technology that solves problems you\u2019re actually experiencing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Don\u2019t solve future problems that don\u2019t exist yet. Most of those problems will never materialise, or they\u2019ll look completely different from what you imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Your most precious resource isn\u2019t your coding skill. It\u2019s your time. Use it to trade and learn from the market, not to build elaborate systems for hypothetical scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
