So said Heptagon Capital\u2019s Chief Technology Officer when your author sat down with him last week to discuss all things tech related. Over hot drinks at trendy Mayfair venue Lal\u00ef<\/a>, it became apparent that AI is making all our lives easier, assuming we know how to use the technology most effectively<\/strong>. It still isn\u2019t perfect and will create new business risks, but have no doubt, AI is here to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all prompt engineers now\u201d<\/strong> was one of the most memorable lines from our conversation. Relative to when we spoke on the topic of technology a year ago<\/a>, there has been \u201ca step change\u201d in AI usage<\/strong>. \u201cAlmost everyone\u201d is now using the outputs of large language models (LLMs) to expedite the mundane and free up time for more purposeful tasks. The reason why? Partly necessity \u2013 if everyone else is doing it, so do we \u2013 but more practically, the technology has improved. There is a \u201cstark contrast\u201d between how little LLMs hallucinate now, relative to a year prior. This matters. As users become \u201cmore trusting\u201d, their time spent getting the most out of AI should only increase proportionately<\/strong>. And if you don\u2019t know how to ask the right questions (or write the correct prompts), then you \u201cmay get left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should we be worried about the pace of technological change? Our CTO\u2019s response was a balanced one. From one perspective, it\u2019s hard not to be a techno-optimist<\/strong>. Human beings have always proven themselves to be \u201cmassively adaptable.\u201d Similar to the views enunciated in our 2025 outlook<\/a>, younger cohorts entering the workforce need not worry about machines taking their jobs; rather, new tools have the potential to create new roles that never previously existed. We should \u201cembrace\u201d AI as it advances<\/strong>. Forget doomsday scenarios and instead contemplate the potential for medical advancements.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The caveat to this thesis is that AI has \u201cmoved the game forward\u201d for all actors, both good and bad<\/strong>. Every organisation needs to be increasingly mindful of the growing sophistication of cyber threats (a topic we have discussed in detail previously<\/a>). Manipulative AI tools can spur improved phishing campaigns, password scams, deepfakes and more. It is therefore necessary to \u201creinforce a culture of paranoia.\u201d<\/strong> Any firm is only \u201cas strong as its weakest link.\u201d If (proprietary) data is \u201cour advantage\u201d, then it is the responsibility of \u201cnot just the IT department\u201d to secure it. Wise words indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
