{"id":217701,"date":"2025-01-22T13:12:22","date_gmt":"2025-01-22T18:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/?p=217701"},"modified":"2025-01-23T03:32:00","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T08:32:00","slug":"ai-enthusiasm-redux","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/ibkr-market-insights\/ai-enthusiasm-redux\/","title":{"rendered":"AI Enthusiasm Redux"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>There is no shortage of good news in the market this morning.\u00a0Netflix (NFLX) is up over 11% after announcing new subscribers that were roughly double expectations, and several other key stocks are responding positively after announcing earnings.\u00a0But although Oracle (ORCL) is off its highs \u2013 it is currently up about 6% after opening over 10% higher \u2013 the story propelling that stock is also boosting other key tech stocks.\u00a0And when big tech rallies, so do the major indices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/ck\/a?!&amp;&amp;p=7f8d737c05c2bc442bad3cab9e0e31a70a7858bb1c60a6b12478923395f47768JmltdHM9MTczNzUwNDAwMA&amp;ptn=3&amp;ver=2&amp;hsh=4&amp;fclid=396fb4cb-d070-6bc1-3e1a-a19ad1c06ae6&amp;psq=oracle+open+ai+project&amp;u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly9vcGVuYWkuY29tL2luZGV4L2Fubm91bmNpbmctdGhlLXN0YXJnYXRlLXByb2plY3Qv&amp;ntb=1\">Project Stargate<\/a>\u00a0is providing the lift to a wide range of tech stocks. Yesterday, President Trump, flanked by OpenAI\u2019s Sam Altman, Oracle\u2019s Larry Ellison, and Softbank\u2019s Masayoshi Son,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/stargate-ai-project-124020741.html\">announced a $500 billion AI infrastructure project<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0The other partner is MGX,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abudhabistartup.com\/startup-news\/2024\/03\/abu-dhabi-launches-mgx-a-100b-global-ai-investment-powerhouse\/\">an Abu Dhabi based firm<\/a>\u00a0linked to that emirate\u2019s sovereign wealth fund, and at present, \u201conly\u201d $100 billion has been committed.\u00a0\u00a0Arm Holdings (ARM), Microsoft (MSFT), Nvidia (NVDA) will also be key technology partners.\u00a0Unsurprisingly, all those publicly traded stocks are rising, along with several AI-linked tech and semiconductor shares.\u00a0The Information Technology and Communications Services sectors are the ones propelling the S&amp;P 500 (SPX) today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once again, this points out the dominance of big tech.\u00a0Just before midday, the aforementioned sectors are up over 2%; of the remaining 9 sectors, five are lower, and three are up only marginally (&lt; 0.2%).\u00a0Only Consumer Discretionary is otherwise in positive territory (+0.3%), thanks to Amazon (AMZN).\u00a0Never mind that only 79 of the 500 SPX stocks are higher, or that declines are outpacing advancers by about 3:2.\u00a0\u00a0If the largest stocks are higher, the cap-weighted indices will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we have five of the \u201cMag 7\u201d stocks higher.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/the-honeymoon-continues\/\">We noted<\/a>\u00a0the various AAPL downgrades yesterday, and some of those concerns continue to weigh on that stock today.\u00a0But the other stock that is modestly lower is quite curious \u2013 it\u2019s Tesla (TSLA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering TSLA\u2019s own aspirations for AI and Elon Musk\u2019s recent closeness to the President, it might seem peculiar that Musk was not part of the Project Stargate announcement.\u00a0Instead, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/news\/politics\/elon-musk-questions-funding-of-trumps-stargate-ai-project-live-updates\/ar-AA1xFg2N?ocid=BingNewsSerp\">threw some shade<\/a>\u00a0on the announcement today, stating on X that &#8220;They don&#8217;t actually have the money,&#8221; and that &#8220;SoftBank has well under $10B secured.
