The objective helps you stay the course and achieve what you initially aspired to do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-investing-defined\">Investing, defined<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in setting a goal, setting the outcome, what exactly&nbsp;<em>is<\/em>&nbsp;investing? And where do you start?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investing is finding, oftentimes, a company, or real estate property, and expending money with the expectation of achieving a profit. It includes the buying and selling of assets within a portfolio to achieve a greater objective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering, before making any type of investment, it is essential to not only understand your risk tolerance, but to also understand the market atmosphere, which, as previously mentioned, includes being knowledgeable about various financial instruments to trade and numerous exchanges to buy and sell securities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-financial-instruments\">Financial instruments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin, let\u2019s start with the basics \u2013 i.e., financial instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Financial instruments are monetary contracts; real or virtual documents representing a legal agreement between parties. They are assets that can be traded or exchanged, and some examples include stocks or shares, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), certificates of deposit (CDs), mutual funds, loans, and derivatives contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These monetary contracts are divided into two types (cash and derivatives), and they are also categorized by asset class (debt-based or equity-based).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign exchange instruments are the third, unique type of financial instrument.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-instrument-by-type\">Instrument by type<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cash\">Cash<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Directly influenced by the market and can be readily bought and sold (e.g., stocks and bonds).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-derivatives\">Derivatives<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on underlying components, such as assets, interest rates, or indices (e.g., a call option on a particular stock, and over-the-counter (OTC) and exchange-traded derivatives).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-instrument-by-asset-class\">Instrument by asset class<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-debt-based\">Debt-based<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Loans&nbsp;made by an investor to the issuer in return for a payment of interest (e.g., Treasury bills (T-bills), commercial paper, bonds, or mortgage-backed securities (MBS)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-equity-based\">Equity-based<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Represent ownership of an asset (e.g., ETFs, mutual funds, stock options, and equity futures).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-foreign-exchange-forex-or-f-x\">Foreign exchange (forex or f\/x)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Include derivatives such as forwards, futures, options on currency pairs, and currency swaps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-stock-exchanges\">What are stock exchanges?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we\u2019ve covered the basics, where are these financial instruments traded or exchanged?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/glossary-terms\/exchange\/\">exchange<\/a>&nbsp;is a marketplace where securities, options, futures, or commodities are traded.
