Skepticism over the returns on investment in artificial-intelligence technology looks to be growing alongside fears over the U.S. economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/market-data\/stocks\/aapl?mod=article_chiclet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Apple<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/market-data\/stocks\/aapl?mod=article_chiclet\"><\/a>stock was down 4.6% in morning trading, in a significant reversal from the previous week when the iPhone maker was steady even as other tech stocks fell following a weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple was likely being particularly hit by news that Warren Buffett\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/market-data\/stocks\/brk.a?mod=article_chiclet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Berkshire Hathaway<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/berkshire-hathaway-apple-stake-warren-buffett-9679bfc6?mod=article_inline\">slashed its stake<\/a>&nbsp;in the company by nearly 50% in the second quarter, according to a filing on Saturday. That punctured enthusiasm around Apple\u2019s plans to integrate AI into its devices, which investors and analysts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/apple-stock-price-earnings-analysts-0f984fb3?mod=article_inline\">have backed<\/a>&nbsp;to boost iPhone sales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the hurt was hardly confined to Apple. Among other large tech stocks, Google-parent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/market-data\/stocks\/goog?mod=article_chiclet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alphabet<\/a> was falling 3.2%, Facebook-owner&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/market-data\/stocks\/meta?mod=article_chiclet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meta Platforms<\/a> was down 3.2%,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/market-data\/stocks\/amzn?mod=article_chiclet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon.com<\/a> was lower by 3.9%, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/market-data\/stocks\/msft?mod=article_chiclet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Microsoft<\/a> was dropping 3.o%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That looks like a more widespread shift in sentiment around the sector, which has been powered by enthusiasm over AI for nearly two years. While Big Tech earnings were mixed last week, a consistent trend of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/amazon-microsoft-alphabet-stock-ai-895b95fe?mod=article_inline\">higher capital expenditures<\/a> associated with AI technology has left investors impatient for returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skeptical voices over AI look to be getting louder. Hedge fund Elliott Management told investors that large technology stocks were in \u201cbubble land\u201d and that AI is \u201coverhyped with many applications not ready for prime time,\u201d according to the Financial Times, citing a letter to clients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elliott didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment early on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question now is whether the hefty valuations assigned to tech companies will continue to shrink or whether their continued healthy cash flows and profitable core businesses will&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/ai-chip-stocks-99dda1ab?mod=article_inline\">support the stocks<\/a>&nbsp;until they can begin to show more-tangible results from AI investment.
