{"id":206948,"date":"2024-05-21T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-21T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=206948"},"modified":"2024-05-22T11:38:18","modified_gmt":"2024-05-22T15:38:18","slug":"a-split-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/a-split-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"A Split Decision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Coming off a mixed showing yesterday that saw the Nasdaq Composite reach a new record high on strength in the semiconductor and mega-cap stocks, the stock market is again looking mixed this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently, the S&amp;P 500 futures are down one point and are trading in-line with fair value, the Nasdaq 100 futures are down 34 points and are trading 0.1% below fair value, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average futures are up 11 points and are trading 0.1% above fair value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One can see that there isn&#8217;t a lot of conviction in the equity futures trade. That disposition can be attributed to several factors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hesitation in front of\u00a0<strong>NVIDIA&#8217;s (<span class=\"stock-ticker\" data-stock-ticker=\"NVDA\">NVDA<\/span>)<\/strong>\u00a0earnings report after Wednesday&#8217;s close and the response to that report<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A mixed reaction to earnings results from\u00a0<strong>Lowe&#8217;s (<span class=\"stock-ticker\" data-stock-ticker=\"LOW\">LOW<\/span>)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><span class=\"stock-ticker\" data-stock-ticker=\"M\">M<\/span>acy&#8217;s (M)<\/strong>, which are higher, and\u00a0<strong>Palo Alto Networks (<span class=\"stock-ticker\" data-stock-ticker=\"PANW\">PANW<\/span>)<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Zoom Video (<span class=\"stock-ticker\" data-stock-ticker=\"ZM\">ZM<\/span>)<\/strong>, which are lower<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residual valuation concern after JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said yesterday that the bank isn&#8217;t expecting to buy back a lot of stock right now<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An expectation of consolidation activity given the run the major indices have enjoyed since their mid-April lows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disinterest as focus turns to upcoming Memorial Day weekend<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be any, or all, of these factors, but the major indices won&#8217;t be moving all that much at today&#8217;s open. Treasuries aren&#8217;t moving much either. The 2-yr note yield is down one basis point to 4.83% and the 10-yr note yield is down two basis points to 4.42%, but both are unchanged for the week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There won&#8217;t be any economic data of note to stir things up for either market.
