{"id":203778,"date":"2024-03-22T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=203778"},"modified":"2024-03-25T04:48:08","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T08:48:08","slug":"fair-and-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/fair-and-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Fair And Square"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on-here\"><strong>What\u2019s going on here?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/03\/21\/doj-sues-apple-over-iphone-monopoly.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sued<\/a>&nbsp;on Thursday, by US regulators on a mission to rid the market of monopolies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\"><strong>What does this mean?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple has a legion of loyal fans, primed to pledge their iPhone allegiance whenever a friend suggests the faux-pas of \u2013&nbsp;<em>gasp<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;trying another brand. The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has voiced its suspicions about the tactics Apple used to get there, though. Apple is being accused of gatekeeping its own services and icing out messaging apps that promote the mingling of iPhone users and anyone that dare prefer the touch of a competitor\u2019s screen. If the DoJ proves that Apple is making the market tougher for rivals and consumers, the company could be forced to break up or shake up its business. That\u2019s a tangible threat for Apple\u2019s 64% market share \u2013 not what the stock needs after falling 7% this year while the S&amp;P 500 climbed 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\"><strong>Why should I care?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Zooming out:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>It\u2019s getting toasty in here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple\u2019s derri\u00e8re is used to the hot seat. European Union regulators&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_24_1161\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slapped<\/a>&nbsp;the company with a \u20ac1.8 billion ($1.95 billion) fine for policies that force music streaming companies to take payments through the App Store. On top of that, Apple\u2019s being assessed against the rules of Europe\u2019s Digital Markets Act, and a dicey outcome could add up to fines worth 10% of its annual revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The bigger picture:<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Big losses, little wins.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That pile-up of legal threats isn\u2019t going to appease Apple\u2019s investors. They\u2019ve been watching through clammy fingers while iPhone sales lag behind local rivals in China and electric vehicle plans were trashed. After all that, Apple has lost its spot in the Fab Five ranking, trailing behind Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet, and Amazon. The only silver lining for iPhone fans: any forced changes could mean more App Store freedom, a wider choice of browsers, and better support for third-party smartwatches and contactless
