{"id":200792,"date":"2024-01-05T10:15:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-05T15:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=200792"},"modified":"2024-01-05T14:23:12","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T19:23:12","slug":"short-sellers-nightmare-195b-evaporates-in-2023s-market-surge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/short-selling\/short-sellers-nightmare-195b-evaporates-in-2023s-market-surge\/","title":{"rendered":"Short Sellers&#8217; Nightmare: $195B Evaporates In 2023&#8217;s Market Surge"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-zinger-key-points\">ZINGER KEY POINTS<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Short sellers had a bad year, with bets on the Mag7 tech giants showing the worst losses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The biggest gains were from short selling banks during the regional bank crisis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In a year when equity markets rallied strongly, short sellers \u2014 traders who position for losses on assets \u2014 had an extremely&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/markets\/cryptocurrency\/23\/12\/36416385\/forget-the-magnificent-7-did-anyone-back-these-1-000-gainers-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tough time in 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data published on Friday by S3 Partners showed that short sellers in the U.S. and Canada<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>were down $194.9 billion in 2023 \u2014 down 20.4% on an average short interest of $958 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These mark-to-market losses of 2023 offset two thirds of the $299.1 billion gain seen in 2022, with the biggest losses coming from the technology<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>and consumer discretionary<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Least Profitable Short Positions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It probably doesn\u2019t need mentioning which were the least profitable short trades \u2014 let\u2019s just run through the top three names:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tesla Inc<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 $12.2 billion total net loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nvidia Corp<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 $11.2 billion loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Apple Inc<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 $7.3 billion loss<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After the remaining&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/markets\/cryptocurrency\/23\/12\/36416385\/forget-the-magnificent-7-did-anyone-back-these-1-000-gainers-in-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Magnificent Seven&nbsp;<\/strong>stocks<\/a>&nbsp;followed a host of Nvidia\u2019s rival semiconductor makers. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, was up 65% in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cryptocurrency<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>shorting wasn\u2019t very profitable either, and also among the biggest equity short losses was&nbsp;<strong>Coinbase Global Inc<\/strong>, the crypto exchange, which lost short sellers $4.9 billion as the stock soared 341% higher in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-did-short-sellers-make-any-money\">Where Did Short Sellers Make Any Money?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There were a few high-profile bankruptcies in 2023 which allowed short sellers some easy pickings from low-hanging fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/news\/23\/04\/32085579\/why-first-republic-bank-stock-frc-is-getting-hammered\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collapse&nbsp;<\/a>of&nbsp;<strong>First Republic Bank<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2014 the second such banking failure during last year\u2019s regional bank crisis \u2014 provided shorts with the biggest opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From average short interest of $194.3 million, the total net profits reaped from the rapid share price decline and eventual demise of First Republic were $1.63 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third-biggest total net gain was $1.06 billion from average short interest of $218.2 million, on short bets during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/analyst-ratings\/analyst-color\/23\/03\/31308902\/svbs-implosion-gets-wall-street-talking-cuban-ackman-chanos-burry-schiff-and-krugma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demise&nbsp;<\/a>of&nbsp;<strong>Silicon Valley Bank<\/strong>, the first regional bank to collapse back in March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In second and fourth places came a pair of pharmaceuticals companies.&nbsp;<strong>Moderna&nbsp;<\/strong>in second place with total net profits of $1.2 billion and&nbsp;<strong>Pfizer&nbsp;<\/strong>in fourth with $990.4 million as both companies reported dwindling sales and failures to cash in on the weigh-loss drug phenomenon that swept players such as&nbsp;<strong>Eli Lilly<\/strong> rapidly higher in
