{"id":197887,"date":"2023-10-19T10:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T14:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=197887"},"modified":"2023-10-19T12:52:04","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T16:52:04","slug":"keep-em-keen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/keep-em-keen\/","title":{"rendered":"Keep &#8216;Em Keen"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ASML reported underwhelming results on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/18\/asml-earnings-report-q3-2023.html\">Wednesday<\/a>, but the Dutch chipmaker knows just how to keep investors on side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You\u2019d assume that chipmaker ASML is bathing in jacuzzis and drinking champagne for breakfast thanks to the hyped-up artificial intelligence trend. But despite supplying machines that underpin the tech, the chip industry as a whole is working through a slump. ASML\u2019s future orders dropped by 40% last quarter from the one before, landing around \u20ac2.6 billion ($2.8 billion). And while the firm\u2019s third-quarter revenue was higher than the same time last year, future projections \u2013 partly based on those pre-orders \u2013 matter far more. Bad luck, then: ASML forecast that next year\u2019s revenue will be the same as this year\u2019s, which is likely to let investors down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Zooming out:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>It\u2019s not over yet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, investors have plenty of reasons to stay hopeful. With most major economies battling inflation, hard-up consumers are saving their cash instead of splashing out on expensive gadgets. So in theory, economic recoveries over the next year or two should encourage pent-up shoppers to swipe their cards \u2013&nbsp;and if new phones and laptops start flying off the shelves, chipmakers will make bank by selling their ordinary chips. That, at a time when demand for high-tech artificial intelligence chips could climb to the next level, too. None of that\u2019s a guarantee, of course, but it\u2019s probably enough to keep ASML investors hanging around for now.<br><br><strong><em>For markets:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Let\u2019s visit the psychic\u2019s lair.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tech investors will get a glimpse of the future soon. US Big Tech companies are due to report their earnings next week, and artificial intelligence is sure to feature heavily on their agendas. Microsoft, for one, reports late next Wednesday, when it\u2019ll spill the beans on its Copilot software. Excitement around artificial intelligence has recently settled into a steadier pace, but any promising updates could reignite the rush that started earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
