Food is necessary but at the same time can be excessive. Much is wasted too.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/06-07-2022-un-report--global-hunger-numbers-rose-to-as-many-as-828-million-in-2021\">Over 10% of the world\u2019s population is affected by hunger<\/a>&nbsp;and as many as one in four suffer from food insecurity (per the World Health Organisation).&nbsp;<strong>We therefore need to think more intelligently about food<\/strong>. We have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heptagon-capital.com\/foods-future-how-to-feed-the-world-more-intelligently\/\">written on this topic regularly<\/a>, but the following recent developments piqued our interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indoor (or vertical) farming is not new, but&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/article\/20230816-the-farmers-boosting-crops-with-electricity\">a detailed article<\/a>&nbsp;we read highlighted how&nbsp;<strong>electroculture<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;is driving the market in new directions<\/strong>. The word is a portmanteau of \u2018electricity\u2019 and \u2018agriculture.\u2019 Its advocates suggest that new farming systems can help mitigate both food crises and the environmental impact of farming. The broad idea relates to how electricity \u2013 particularly in the form of&nbsp;<strong>smart lighting<\/strong>&nbsp;or even infusing plants with charges \u2013 can stimulate both growth and yield. Plant wearables, or more prosaically,&nbsp;<strong>monitoring devices<\/strong>&nbsp;are another development. Trials are currently underway in Europe and the US.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the output from vertical farms may find their way into the products of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/savoreat.com\/\">SavorEat<\/a>. Describing itself as a \u201cnext generation meat alternative products\u201d business, the company will be making its debut in the US later this month. Founded in Israel, the company uses&nbsp;<strong>a combination of a chef robot, proprietary 3D-printing technology and a unique set of ingredients<\/strong>. Think of it as a combination of food inputs,&nbsp;hardware and software, allowing consumers to customise their burgers, based around fat, protein or consistency requirements. Your author has yet to try the product, but when he spoke with SavorEat\u2019s founder recently, she described her purpose being to create&nbsp;<strong>\u201cfood as an experience.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;Today\u2019s products should be seen as akin to the first iPhone; they should only get better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this doesn&#8217;t sound far enough out, then consider the work being done by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/solarfoods.com\/\">Solar Foods<\/a>. Based in Finland, the business has created solein, which it believes to be&nbsp;<strong>\u201cthe purest and most sustainable protein in the world.\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Solein is made out of thin air<\/strong>. Yes, you did read that correctly. The approach pioneered is to take airborne microbes and ferment them using bioprocesses. A recent&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/solarfoods.com\/milk-from-carbon-dioxide-and-electricity\/\">announcement<\/a>&nbsp;seeks to use a similar process to create milk from scratch. In the words of the company\u2019s founder (with whom we spoke last year), the work being done by Solar Foods is \u201can interesting R&amp;D endeavour\u201d, which needs scale.
