{"id":195564,"date":"2023-08-29T11:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=195564"},"modified":"2023-08-29T12:11:57","modified_gmt":"2023-08-29T16:11:57","slug":"zoom-and-gloom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/zoom-and-gloom\/","title":{"rendered":"Zoom And Gloom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/euro-area\/money-supply-m3\">Data<\/a>&nbsp;out on Monday measured the amount of money trading hands in Europe, but you\u2019ll have to look real close to spot it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The European Central Bank (ECB) measures the amount of money circulating around the eurozone, which includes folks\u2019 deposits, loans, and savings. And this July, that cash was down 0.4% from the same time last year \u2013 the first time it\u2019s shrank since 2010. More often than not, smaller numbers mean consumers are borrowing less. No surprises there, then: today\u2019s higher interest rates are making borrowing more expensive. So without as much cash in their pockets, Europeans are spending less. And in a bid to keep money coming in, stores and services will likely start pulling down their prices. That\u2019s not necessarily a bad outcome, though: the ECB\u2019s rate hikes were designed to calm heady inflation, and this could be a sign that the plan\u2019s in motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For markets:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Europe needs a break.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In theory, Europe\u2019s shrinking cash piles could hint at lessening inflation. We won\u2019t know for sure until Thursday, though, when August\u2019s eurozone inflation figures are released. That data will be a chunky talking point when the ECB debates future hikes at its September meeting. And while the decision\u2019s still anyone\u2019s guess, one takeaway\u2019s for sure: Europe\u2019s economy is slowing down, and the ECB will need more than a pause in hikes to jolt it back to life.<br><br><strong><em>Zooming out:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>America\u2019s close\u2026 ish.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thing is, central banks will only start slicing rates when they\u2019re absolutely sure inflation\u2019s in check. Right now, the US is closest. But still, at the Federal Reserve\u2019s latest meeting, inflation was deemed too high to pause rates. In fact, officials are open to another hike instead. So don\u2019t hold your breath if you\u2019re waiting for lower rates to push stocks into a rally or bring down your mortgage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally Posted August 28, 2023
