{"id":191724,"date":"2023-06-08T11:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-06-08T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=191724"},"modified":"2023-06-08T11:43:17","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T15:43:17","slug":"out-of-pocket","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/out-of-pocket\/","title":{"rendered":"Out Of Pocket"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The OECD&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/world-economy-set-for-weak-inflation-plagued-recovery-oecd-says-1.1929831\">said<\/a>&nbsp;on Wednesday that the global economy might have little to flaunt this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These might not be the breeziest days of your life, but compare them to the full-scale doomsday scenarios that have been batted around this year and you\u2019ll see that the global economy\u2019s actually held up alright. But the World Bank just won\u2019t let us relax, warning that the world\u2019s economies are in a \u201cprecarious state\u201d and headed for major rate-hike-induced slowdowns. And as if that wasn\u2019t depressing enough, the OECD has jumped on the bandwagon. The organization upped its global growth forecast to 2.7%, given China\u2019s more relaxed Covid rules. Thing is, if you take out pandemic-hit 2020, that\u2019s still the lowest annual rate since the 2008 financial crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For markets:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Decision time.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Relentless interest rate hikes are a main culprit, it\u2019s true, but the OECD reckons lingering inflation\u2019s still a big risk too. That\u2019s why it\u2019s urging central banks to stay tough until headline inflation&nbsp;<em>and<\/em>&nbsp;core inflation \u2013&nbsp;which strips out volatile food and energy costs \u2013&nbsp;come back to target. But the OECD predicts that inflation across the G20 countries will stick at 6.1% this year and 4.7% the next. So all eyes will be on the big dogs next week: the Federal Reserve\u2019s expected to pause hikes, while the European Central Bank\u2019s suspected to be gearing up for another hike.<br><br><strong><em>The bigger picture:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Time to see a shrink.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s a picture of economic weakness right now, not just because of the country\u2019s internal problems. See, China makes up about a quarter of the world\u2019s manufacturing output, so its export numbers tell you a lot about the rest of the world too. And May\u2019s weren\u2019t good: Chinese exports shrank much faster than expected, with a hefty 7.5% slump from the same time the year before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally Posted
