{"id":189307,"date":"2023-04-25T10:50:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-25T14:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=189307"},"modified":"2023-04-25T10:52:14","modified_gmt":"2023-04-25T14:52:14","slug":"chip-wars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/chip-wars\/","title":{"rendered":"Chip Wars"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The US just played its latest move in the US-China chipmaking tech-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The US has been doing everything it can to stay ahead in the tech race, including placing tough export controls on China to stop the country from getting its hands on the market\u2019s most advanced chips. Well, the world\u2019s second-biggest economy retaliated earlier this month, announcing a national security review into US chipmaker \u2013&nbsp;and one of three memory chip market leaders \u2013 Micron. But since Chinese sales make up about a quarter of the chipmaker\u2019s sales, banning the firm could cause it a major headache. The US jumped at that chance to go tit-for-tat, asking South Korea to tell its chipmakers&nbsp;<em>not<\/em>&nbsp;to plug the supply gap if China ends up banning Micron. That\u2019s certainly the right place to ask: South Korea\u2019s home to the other two market titans, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Zooming in:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>It\u2019s all in the timing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s a tough ask for South Korea: its chipmakers\u2019 jaws would drop at the mere thought of fulfilling a Chinese supply gap, especially now that the industry\u2019s facing a massive glut and&nbsp; falling prices. Thing is, the US has timing on its side. South Korea\u2019s president is taking a trip to Washington this week, and it\u2019ll be hard to forget that the country\u2019s exemption from tight US chip export controls&nbsp;will be up for renewal \u2013&nbsp;or not \u2013&nbsp;later this year.<br><br><strong><em>The bigger picture:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Lucky for some.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, some analysts doubt that China will replicate its push against US-based Micron in the more specialized sectors of the chip market, since the country\u2019s currently too reliant on western tech. But either way, you can bet China will be ramping up its domestic tech development in a bid to become more self-sufficient. That would light a fire under Chinese chipmakers, which explains why news of the Micron probe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/beijing-s-micron-probe-spurs-12-billion-rally-in-china-chip-stocks-1.1903711\">sent<\/a>&nbsp;other chipmaking stocks to the heavens earlier this
