For the week ending March 4, initial claims for state unemployment benefits jumped 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 211,000, according to Labor Department&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/ui\/data.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">statistics<\/a>&nbsp;released Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read on for a breakdown of the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.2% for the week ending Feb. 25; that&#8217;s an increase of 0.1 percentage points from the previous week&#8217;s unrevised rate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 25 was 1,718,000; an increase of 69,000 from the previous week&#8217;s revised level.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The previous week&#8217;s level was revised down by 6,000 from 1.655 million to 1.649 million.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The four-week moving average was about 1.68&nbsp;million, an increase of 9,500 from the previous week&#8217;s revised average.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The previous week&#8217;s average was revised down by 1,500 from 1.672 million to 1.67 million.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unadjusted Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 237,513 in the week ending March 4.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That&#8217;s an increase of 35,357 (or 17.5%) from the previous week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were 219,875 initial claims in the comparable week in 2022.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.4% during the week ending Feb. 25, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The advance unadjusted level of insured unemployment in state programs totaled more than 1.9 million; an increase of 83,404 (or 4.4%) from the preceding week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why It Matters:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The report comes on the heels of Fed Chair&nbsp;<strong>Jerome Powell<\/strong>&#8216;s testimony&nbsp;before Congress this week about a possible new interest rate hike of 0.5%&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/government\/23\/03\/31264548\/banking-energy-stocks-take-turn-for-the-worse-as-powell-talks-inflation-with-senators-who-are-concer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">later this month<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal, Powell said, is to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/federal-reserve\/23\/03\/31242550\/fed-in-focus-as-powell-addresses-senate-committee-in-testimony-likely-to-zero-in-on-inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;cool&#8221;&nbsp;the economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/robertreich.substack.com\/p\/why-relying-on-further-interest-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blog post<\/a>&nbsp;Tuesday,&nbsp;<strong>Robert Reich<\/strong>, former labor secretary under&nbsp;<strong>Bill Clinton<\/strong>, criticized the approach, stating there&#8217;s no need to continue to raise interest rate hikes, as inflation is already winding down, and he said being fixated on a 2% goal could end up hurting more than it heals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Why not 4%? Getting inflation down to 2% is going to cause too much pain for the most vulnerable,&#8221; he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senators have expressed growing concern for the possibility of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/government\/23\/02\/30946283\/2-million-people-would-lose-their-jobs-by-year-end-fed-official-forecast-says-how-might-this-be-avoi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 million people losing their jobs this year<\/a>&nbsp;on account of the increased interest rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jobless claims report comes on the heels of mass layoffs across the tech industry. So far in March,&nbsp;<strong>Atlassian<\/strong>&nbsp;confirmed that it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/news\/23\/03\/31227111\/atlassian-announces-workforce-reduction-of-5-of-total-workforce-or-500-employees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">terminated 500 employees<\/a>, or 5% of its total workforce;&nbsp;<strong>SiriusXM<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/news\/23\/03\/31233811\/sirius-xm-lays-off-475-employees-on-completing-strategic-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">laid off 475 employees<\/a>, or 8% of its workforce;&nbsp;<strong>Alphabet<\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/news\/23\/03\/31151648\/googles-self-driving-unit-waymo-cuts-jobs-as-parent-shifts-gears-to-focus-on-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced a round of layoffs<\/a>&nbsp;for its Waymo unit; and<strong>&nbsp;Meta Platforms Inc<\/strong> is reportedly planning to terminate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/news\/23\/03\/31174557\/150-000-laid-off-tech-workers-fuel-massive-wave-of-new-startups-and-theyre-actually-making-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer
