In the wake of FTX&#8217;s implosion, we have a report this morning that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/genesis-suspending-client-withdrawals-lending-131454944.html\">Genesis would be pausing withdrawals<\/a>. This comes after various news reports that BlockFi may be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/blockfi-prepares-for-potential-bankruptcy-as-crypto-contagion-spreads-11668534824\">preparing for a bankruptcy filing<\/a>.&nbsp;The monetary tide has been ebbing steadily, and we now see that the cryptocurrency section of the beach was chock full of financial skinny-dippers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is said that a rising tide lifts all boats, and that certainly is the case when we think broadly about financial assets.&nbsp;The tide of course is money, but rather than being driven by the gravitational pull of the moon over the oceans, financial tides are caused largely by the influence of central bankers.&nbsp;Central bankers are obviously far less predictable than the moon\u2019s orbit around the earth.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet the reaction to rising financial tides remains habitual.&nbsp;Mr. Buffett\u2019s famous quote (<a href=\"https:\/\/buffett.cnbc.com\/video\/1994\/04\/25\/buffett-you-dont-find-out-whos-been-swimming-naked-until-the-tide-goes-out.html\">at the 1:50 mark in this link<\/a>), from the 1994 Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting, refers to the tendency of reinsurers to pile into risky bond bets en masse.&nbsp;The product is different, but human nature \u2013 at least when it applies to financial markets \u2013 remains all too constant.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tradersinsight.news\/traders-insight\/securities\/crypto\/looking-back-at-cryptos-wild-ride\/\">We noted yesterday<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Would cryptos have become mainstream, let alone a mania, if we had positive real interest rates? I think not. Zero nominal and negative real rates encouraged all sorts of speculative excesses. This was just the most extreme.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Easy money skews the balance between risk and return.&nbsp;When rates are low, investors need to take greater risks to generate returns.&nbsp;When rates are low, bond investors become incentivized to finance weaker credits and equity investors hew toward speculative rather than defensive names.&nbsp;When rates become exceptionally low, speculation can take on a life of its own.&nbsp;The popularity of cryptocurrencies was merely one element of the speculative fever that raged during 2020-21.&nbsp;Meme stock mania and the explosion in short-term call options trading stemmed from the same factors.&nbsp;The ultimate form of easy money \u2013 negative real interest rates \u2013 spurred a speculative wave.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference with cryptocurrency is that it is a relatively new financial innovation.&nbsp;It simply was not a mainstream product until recently.&nbsp;For better or worse, we\u2019ve become relatively accustomed to booms and busts in stocks, bonds and derivatives.&nbsp;They\u2019ve been&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bing.com\/ck\/a?!&amp;&amp;p=ca769462d72d956aJmltdHM9MTY2ODU1NjgwMCZpZ3VpZD0yYjBlZmM3Yy03NWM0LTY3OTUtMzk3NC1mNzc5NzQ0MzY2OWUmaW5zaWQ9NTM2Nw&amp;ptn=3&amp;hsh=3&amp;fclid=2b0efc7c-75c4-6795-3974-f7797443669e&amp;psq=pre-disastered&amp;u=a1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cueW91dHViZS5jb20vd2F0Y2g_dj1HVHF6NGR1UGRZUQ&amp;ntb=1\">pre-disastered<\/a>, so to speak.&nbsp;Industry executives and regulators have a framework \u2013 sometimes imperfect \u2013 for how to deal with crises in these asset classes.&nbsp;Cryptos have not evolved that framework.&nbsp;Their freewheeling nature and lack of regulatory oversight were key selling points when they were rising.
