{"id":162175,"date":"2022-10-18T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-18T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=162175"},"modified":"2023-01-19T18:15:38","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T23:15:38","slug":"amcs-new-note-sale-sends-buyers-to-concession-stand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/amcs-new-note-sale-sends-buyers-to-concession-stand\/","title":{"rendered":"AMC\u2019s New Note Sale Sends Buyers to Concession Stand"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>AMC Entertainment (NYSE: AMC) managed to sell new high-yield notes at a price to yield 15%, amid uncertainties over interest-rate hikes, rising economic and geopolitical concerns, as well as <a href=\"\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/it-could-be-curtains-for-amc-and-the-entire-movie-theater-industry\/\">industry-specific risks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AMC, the world\u2019s largest movie theater chain, recently sold US$400 million worth of 12.75%, 5-year senior notes at a price to yield 15% through its subsidiary Odeon Cinemas Group Ltd (OCGL). The company said it intends to use net proceeds from the sale, which is expected to close on or around October 20, to help refinance US$505.6 million of certain of OCGL\u2019s term loans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prospective buyers of AMC\u2019s debt likely waxed cautious about the deal, as initial price talk of about 14% was ultimately raised, and the price lowered from around US$95 to US$92 over the course of the offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bad-stress\"><strong>Bad Stress<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The deal falls against a backdrop of rising pressure in the high-yield corporate bond market, amid the Federal Reserve\u2019s continued efforts to combat stubbornly high levels of inflation with an aggressive monetary policy tightening regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the conclusion to its two-day meeting in September, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) \u2013 the policymaking arm of the Federal Reserve \u2013 decided to raise the target range for its federal funds rate to 3.0% to 3.25%, and said it anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be \u201cappropriate\u201d to returning inflation to its 2% objective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They appear to have a long way to go to meet that objective after&nbsp;the <a href=\"\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/september-cpi-no-fed-pivot-in-sight\/\">Consumer Price Index<\/a> (CPI) registered for September a hotter-than-expected 8.2% year-over-year increase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help fight inflation, the central bank effectively increased its policy rate by 75 basis points (bps) for the past three consecutive meetings and foresees rates climbing to a range in the area of 4.25% to 4.50% by December, and perhaps even a bit higher in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moreover, the FOMC added that Russia\u2019s war against Ukraine is not only \u201ccausing tremendous human and economic hardship\u201d, but it, and related events, \u201care creating additional upward pressure on inflation and are weighing on global economic activity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture3-1.jpg\" alt=\"US Treasuries (on-the-run)\" class=\"wp-image-162178 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture3-1.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture3-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 624px; aspect-ratio: 624\/351;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past month to October 14, the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note has risen nearly 60 bps, while an inversion in the&nbsp;2-year\/10-year part of the yield curve has been firmly in place since at least July 6 \u2013 a potential sign of a prolonged recession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-junk-pile-dwindles-spreads-widen\"><strong>Junk Pile Dwindles, Spreads Widen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, junk bond spreads have been generally widening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other AMC bonds, for instance, have cratered in value, including its 7.5% notes due February 15, 2029, which fell almost 7% intraday Monday to US$71.75.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture2-1.jpg\" alt=\"Other AMC bonds, for instance, have cratered in value, including its 7.5% notes due February 15, 2029, which fell almost 7% intraday Monday to US$71.75.\" class=\"wp-image-162177 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture2-1.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture2-1-300x169.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 624px; aspect-ratio: 624\/351;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some market analysts also point to the likelihood that fewer-than-anticipated debt sales will be offered in 2022, amid rising borrowing costs, and as issuers seem to face a fast-closing window for getting deals done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oleg Melentyev, Bank of America Merrill Lynch\u2019s head of high yield credit strategy, recently noted, according to Bloomberg, that with \u201cthe junk bond primary market practically frozen,<br>liquidity has deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By some measures, high yield debt recorded a loss of more than 1.1% for the week-ended October 14, following steady declines in three of the four sessions. The carnage encompassed the spectrum of junk bonds ratings, with \u2018CCC\u2019s down over 1.25% to a yield that neared 16% \u2013 an increase of almost 75 bps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bloomberg further cited that BofA Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, and Citi each lowered their outlooks on high-yield corporate bond issuance in 2022 by US$55 billion, US$100 billion, and US$250 billion, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Year-to-date, the primary market has suffered a drop of almost 28% year-on-year as of September to US$1.14 trillion, according to data compiled by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-not-a-big-box-office-draw\"><strong>Not a Big Box Office Draw<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the meantime, a host of headwinds have been rattling the cinema ecosystem, including weak content, increasing streaming video on demand (SVoD) competition, and shifting consumer behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discount on AMC\u2019s latest debt sale, for example, is likely not merely a reflection of the recent volatility within the financial markets and across the macro landscape, but also an indication of industry-specific issues within the theater exhibition business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\"
