{"id":161145,"date":"2022-10-10T13:55:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-10T17:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=161145"},"modified":"2023-03-14T14:02:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T18:02:40","slug":"plant-based-meat-sales-stagnate-while-carnivores-continue-to-carry-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/plant-based-meat-sales-stagnate-while-carnivores-continue-to-carry-market\/","title":{"rendered":"Plant-Based Meat Sales Stagnate While Carnivores Continue to Carry the Market"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The allure of plant-based foods may be plateauing, as carnivores continue to dominate the consumer landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Food companies that focus on manufacturing sustainable sources of protein appear to be benefiting from healthy global demand, despite challenges on the supply chain and workforce fronts \u2013 and as consumption of \u201ctraditional\u201d beef products heats up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmi.org\/docs\/default-source\/research\/power_of_meat_2022_top_10_final.pdf?sfvrsn=d49777ce_2\">Food Industry Association\u2019s (FIA) 2022 Power of Meat Report<\/a>, for example, meat eaters comprise 74% of consumers, an increase of 3% over the prior year, while <a href=\"https:\/\/health.usnews.com\/best-diet\/flexitarian-diet\">flexitarians<\/a> make up 16%, and <a href=\"https:\/\/foodinsight.org\/basics-of-vegan-diet\/\">vegans<\/a>\/vegetarians remain at 6%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture5.jpg\" alt=\"The allure of plant-based foods may be plateauing, as carnivores continue to dominate the consumer landscape.\" class=\"wp-image-161147 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture5.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture5-300x169.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 624px; aspect-ratio: 624\/351;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, the FIA observed that shoppers are \u201cwell aware of supply chain challenges and inflationary pressures, and are adjusting purchases.\u201d The organization noted that 75% of consumers have seen higher prices for meat\/poultry, with 43% noticing fewer promotions. In response, over 60% save by eating out\/ordering in less and \u201cinstead try to recreate restaurant experiences at home\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changes in eating behaviors fall against a backdrop of stubbornly <a href=\"\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/macro\/ibkr-economic-landscape-inflation-and-the-fed-3\/\">high levels of inflation<\/a>. In August, the U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 8.3% year-over-year, with the food component up 0.8% on the month and 11.4% over the past 12-month period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture6.jpg\" alt=\"CPI (YoY %)\" class=\"wp-image-161148 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture6.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture6-300x169.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 624px; aspect-ratio: 624\/351;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the figures, the meats, poultry, fish, and eggs index; the fruits and vegetables index; and the non-alcoholic beverages index all increased 0.5% in August, while the food away from home index rose 0.9% in August after rising 0.7% in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-consumer-staples-pressure-cooker\"><strong>Consumer Staples\u2019 Pressure Cooker<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rising prices will undoubtedly place pressure on consumer staples companies, in general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dave Novosel,&nbsp;a senior analyst at corporate bond research service firm Gimme Credit, noted that Tyson Foods, Inc\u2019s (NYSE: TSN) bottom line, for example, will face a host of headwinds, driven primarily by \u201csoaring costs\u201d that are running around 15% higher than last year, including for feed ingredients, labor, live animals, cooking oils, and freight costs. He also observed that the company is facing year-to-date declines in volumes for beef and pork, \u201cstemming mostly from supply chain problems, as well as reduced demand because of the weaker economy.\u201d However, overall, \u201cthe company is performing quite well\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sales at Tyson Foods increased 8% in the third quarter, as an 8% hike in average prices eclipsed a 2% decrease in volume. Revenues were mainly boosted by the continuing recovery in the foodservice channel and a 15% gain in e-commerce sales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gimme Credit expects the firm\u2019s revenues to rise in the low double-digits for the full year 2022, including an estimated gain of more than 20% in chicken and more than 11% for beef.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In line with rising levels of inflation Tyson Foods said its average sales price increased in the first nine months of fiscal 2022, as input costs such as live cattle, labor, freight, and transportation increased, while demand for its beef products \u201cremained strong\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The current live cattle futures contract has risen roughly 7.5% year-over-year, after hitting a peak of more than US$152 in late April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tyson, the maker of brands such as Jimmy Dean, Hillshire Farm, and Ball Park, also noted that its average sales price fell slightly in the third quarter, driven by reduced demand for premium cuts of beef \u2013 a further sign that inflation is curbing consumers\u2019 eating habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wilting Plant Demand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, Beyond Meats (NASDAQ: BYND), a Los Angeles\u2013based producer of plant-based meat substitutes, appears to be suffering from stagnant demand amongst a static audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the second quarter of 2022, net revenues at the company fell 1.6% to US$147 million, compared to US$149.4 million in the same year-ago period. The company attributed the decline to changes in price, foreign exchange rates, and increased trade discounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, consumers may generally be limiting their purchases of plant-based meats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantbasedfoods.org\/2021-u-s-retail-sales-data-for-the-plant-based-foods-industry\/\">Plant Based Foods Association<\/a> cited that dollar sales of plant-based beef remained unchanged in 2021 from the prior year at US$1.4 billion, with a market share of 1.4% across the total meat category. Moreover, only 19% of households purchased plant-based meat in 2021\u2014up just 1% from the prior year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture4-4.jpg\" alt=\"Dollar Sales ( US$ Bn)\" class=\"wp-image-161153 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture4-4.jpg 624w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/10\/Picture4-4-300x169.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\"
