{"id":112499,"date":"2021-11-23T10:35:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T15:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=112499"},"modified":"2023-03-14T14:54:26","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T18:54:26","slug":"destiny-calls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/destiny-calls\/","title":{"rendered":"Destiny Calls"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tadawul \u2013 Saudi Arabia\u2019s stock exchange operator \u2013 is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/saudi-bourse-operator-sets-price-range-up-1-bln-ipo-2021-11-21\/\">planning<\/a>&nbsp;to list on the stock market next month, in a move that\u2019s been on the cards for a long time\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tadawul was reportedly first thinking about listing its shares on\u2026 well, itself back in 2016, but the company paused the plan to focus on more pressing matters: encouraging foreign investors to trade on its platform, and hosting the biggest-ever initial public offering (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finimize.com\/wp\/definition\/initial-public-offering-ipo\/\">IPO<\/a>) for oil giant Saudi Aramco.<br><br>The company might\u2019ve been right to wait. For one thing, the number of trades on its exchange is now at record highs, boosting both its bottom line and investor optimism. And for another, the company should fetch a good price for its shares given how high valuations are right now. Tadawul, then, has said it\u2019ll sell a 30% stake in its business on the stock market next month \u2013 a move that could see it raise up to $1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>The bigger picture:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Oil country problems.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0one big risk to Tadawul, mind you. See, OPEC+ \u2013 a group of the world\u2019s biggest oil-producing countries \u2013 looks like it\u2019ll\u00a0resist\u00a0calls to boost oil production in December, which might encourage Japan, China, and the US to\u00a0release\u00a0some of their own stockpiles. That extra supply would drive down prices, which would dent Saudi Arabia\u2019s heavily oil-dependent stock market. And if investors start steering clear of the country\u2019s stocks, Tadawul\u2019s profits \u2013 and its eventual IPO valuation \u2013 could take a hit.<br><br><strong><em>Zooming out:\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><em>IPOs might run out of steam.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s been a record year for IPOs, with companies\u00a0raising\u00a0over $600 billion already this year. A lot of that\u2019s to do with government and central bank support that\u2019s helped keep investors flush with cash. But that support is starting to dwindle, and some analysts are warning that the shift could cause stock valuations to drop off \u2013 and take the IPO boom along with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
