So in order to teach them well and let them lead the way, the country\u2019s government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finimize.com\/wp\/news\/schools-out\/\">banned<\/a>&nbsp;for-profit after-school tutoring last quarter, as well as introduced stricter limits on how long they can play video games \u2013 both of which, it argued, were having detrimental effects on kids\u2019 wellbeing.<br><br>Tencent knows how they feel: the company \u2013 which sells advertising space in its apps and online games \u2013 saw its ad revenue grow just 5% compared to the same time last year, as education companies collapsed and kids\u2019 laser-like focus faded. And while its fintech and business services segment \u2013 which includes instant messaging app WeChat \u2013 posted strong growth, the damage was already done:&nbsp;Tencent\u2019s overall revenue climbed by a weaker-than-expected 13% \u2013 the slowest quarterly growth since the company hit the stock market in 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For markets:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>China\u2019s still on the agenda.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most Chinese tech giants\u2019 stocks are listed in the US or Hong Kong, so investors \u2013 nervous about government crackdowns on foreign-listed domestic companies \u2013 have been steering well clear lately. They\u2019ve not sworn off the country altogether, mind you: data out this week showed international investors were holding around $560 billion worth of&nbsp;<em>Chinese<\/em>-listed stocks at the end of last quarter \u2013 30% more than the same time last year.<br><br><strong><em>Zooming out:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>There are bigger fish to fry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Chinese government\u2019s mood probably isn\u2019t about to improve: new data has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/chinas-factory-gate-inflation-hits-26-year-high-2021-11-10\/\">shown<\/a>&nbsp;that the prices manufacturers pay for materials accelerated by its fastest pace in 26 years last month, as the country continues to be rocked by power and commodity shortages. Those higher costs will probably be passed onto consumers, put a dent in consumer spending, and, ultimately, hamper the country\u2019s economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally
