{"id":110773,"date":"2021-11-10T10:45:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-10T15:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=110773"},"modified":"2023-01-19T17:37:50","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T22:37:50","slug":"tough-breakup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/tough-breakup\/","title":{"rendered":"Tough Breakup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PayPal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/11\/08\/paypal-pypl-earnings-q3-2021.html\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;worse-than-expected results late on Monday, as the payment app realizes that the only way to get over eBay might be to get under Amazon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>PayPal\u2019s former owner, eBay, spun the payment company off six years ago, but they\u2019ve kept working closely together ever since. Now, though, eBay is transitioning toward its very own payments system. That ghosting was evident last quarter, when eBay\u2019s users spent 45% less via PayPal than they did the same time the year before. Throw in the fact that payments on PayPal\u2019s cash transfer app Venmo grew by a weaker-than-expected 36%, and the firm\u2019s total revenue only climbed by 13%.<br><br>PayPal\u2019s revenue outlook for the rest of the year was disappointing too, mostly because the company\u2019s worried that supply shortages and the return of in-store shopping could dent ecommerce activity. Needless to say, investors aren\u2019t confident either: they initially sent its stock down 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The bigger picture:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>A more supportive relationship.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PayPal reckons Venmo could be its biggest source of revenue in the future, and it\u2019s laying the groundwork to make that happen: the company just announced that Amazon would be introducing the transfer app as a payment option next year. And since Venmo has been supporting crypto payments since April, the move might bring Amazon one step closer to learning some new tricks too\u2026<br><br><strong><em>Zooming out:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Crypto\u2019s the place to be.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amazon would be wise to think about integrating crypto payments: the market\u2019s now worth over $3 trillion, with bitcoin and ether each&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/cryptocurrencies-hit-market-cap-3-063245377.html\">reaching<\/a>&nbsp;all-time highs on Tuesday. That might partly be down to the launch of the first US bitcoin-ETF last month, which has introduced more people to the OG cryptocurrency&nbsp;<em>and&nbsp;<\/em>inspired hopes that more crypto ETFs are in the pipeline. The US Federal Reserve\u2019s still skeptical, mind you: it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/11\/08\/fed-report-risky-assets-crash-stablecoin-meme-stocks\/\">warned<\/a>&nbsp;investors this
