So, if the values in a dataset lie close together, the standard deviation would be small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, if the values are spread out, the standard deviation would be larger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-is-standard-deviation\">What is Standard Deviation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s get back to the very basics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What is meant by deviation from the mean?<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply put, the deviation is the distance of a data point from the mean. Consider a random variable X which consists of n different observations x<sub>1<\/sub>,x<sub>2<\/sub>,&#8230;,x<sub>n<\/sub>, Below, we show the deviations of two observations x<sub>1<\/sub> and x<sub>2<\/sub> from the mean of X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image img-twothird\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/deviations-1quantinsti.png\" alt=\"Standard Deviation\" class=\"wp-image-110381 lazyload\" width=\"512\" height=\"233\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/deviations-1quantinsti.png 512w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/deviations-1quantinsti-300x137.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 512px; aspect-ratio: 512\/233;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Deviation here tells us how far an observation is from the mean. It can be positive as well as negative, based on whether the observation is greater or lesser than the mean respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if we measure the total deviation by summing all such values i.e.,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"715\" height=\"38\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/standard-deviation-quantinsti.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-110397 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/standard-deviation-quantinsti.png 715w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/standard-deviation-quantinsti-700x37.png 700w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/standard-deviation-quantinsti-300x16.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 715px) 100vw, 715px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 715px; aspect-ratio: 715\/38;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll end up with zero because the positive and negative values will cancel each other out! What if we take the absolute values and sum them instead? We could. Either that or we could square the differences and aggregate them. The latter is preferred because it has attractive mathematical properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, to repeat, we square the differences to get rid of the positive and negative signs and compute their average. This resultant quantity is called the&nbsp;<strong>variance<\/strong>, which captures the dispersion in the data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard deviation is a standardized version of the variance, obtained by taking the positive square root of the variance and hence the name,&nbsp;<strong>standard deviation<\/strong>. In the next section, we will discuss the formula to calculate the standard deviation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"standard-deviation-formula\">Standard deviation formula<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The formula for calculating the standard deviation (denoted by&nbsp;<strong>\u03c3<\/strong>) is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img
