Yet it\u2019s useful to think about in terms of three numbers: 1.2, 1.5 and 2.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite more than two decades worth of global climate conferences like the COP26 gathering now underway in Glasgow, the world has failed to tap down the growth in greenhouse gases that are heating up the planet and destabilizing weather patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the COP21 conference in Paris back in 2015, 195 nations signed a landmark agreement to hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit that increase to 1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where are we now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-record-heat\"><strong>Record Heat<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, one of the warmest years on record, global temperatures hit 1.2\u00baC (2.2 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, according to the World Meteorological Organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"698\" height=\"621\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/sladv_11-8-21_1.jpg\" alt=\"Global avg surface temperature\" class=\"wp-image-110305 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/sladv_11-8-21_1.jpg 698w, https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/11\/sladv_11-8-21_1-300x267.jpg 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 698px; aspect-ratio: 698\/621;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, there were a record number of hurricanes, wildfires and floods amplified by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/environment\/\">climate change<\/a>&nbsp;that cost the global economy some $210 billion in damage, data compiled in a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.munichre.com\/en\/company\/media-relations\/media-information-and-corporate-news\/media-information\/2021\/2020-natural-disasters-balance.html\">report<\/a>&nbsp;by reinsurance company Munich Re showed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The climate change price tag in the US hit $95 billion, double the level in 2019, thanks to a record number of Atlantic hurricanes and wildfires in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the first half of 2021, we\u2019ve seen severe heat waves in North America\u2019s Pacific Northwest and historic flooding in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Climate Stakes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A world that warms to 1.5\u00b0C is now considered a pretty aspirational target. Yet even if global economies decarbonized quickly enough to hit that goal, the climate impact would still be negative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If we slip to 2.0\u00b0C or more, the risk of a climate breakdown increases markedly, according to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yaleclimateconnections.org\/2021\/08\/1-5-or-2-degrees-celsius-of-additional-global-warming-does-it-make-a-difference\/\">research<\/a>&nbsp;by climate scientists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider the following: With a 1.5\u00b0C increase, extreme hot days in the mid-latitudes of the planet will be 3\u00b0C hotter (5.4\u00b0F) than pre-industrial levels. A 2\u00b0C increase, translates into about 4\u00b0C hotter (7.2\u00b0F) than pre-industrial levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sea levels are expected to rise by about 0.26 to 0.77 meters (0.85-2.52 feet) relative to the average from 1986-2005 by 2100. If you\u2019re looking at a 2\u00b0C increase, sea levels are projected to rise by 2100 by 0.36 to 0.87 meters (1.18-2.85 feet) during the same period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Takeaway<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With an 1.5\u00b0C increase, the Arctic Ocean will become ice-free in the summer about once every 100 years.
