{"id":108387,"date":"2021-10-25T11:15:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-25T15:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=108387"},"modified":"2023-01-19T17:37:53","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T22:37:53","slug":"computer-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/computer-error\/","title":{"rendered":"Computer Error"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Intel&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/21\/intel-intc-earnings-q3-2021.html\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;mixed earnings late last week, as the chipmaking giant struggles to hack it in the absence of some of its best customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The irony of this chip shortage wouldn\u2019t be lost on Alanis Morisette: PC makers need Intel\u2019s chips badly, but the very fact that there&nbsp;<em>is&nbsp;<\/em>a shortage means that they\u2019re making fewer PCs, which is in turn hurting the part of Intel\u2019s business that makes the chips they need. Hence the segment\u2019s revenue fell 2% last quarter compared to the same time last year. Instead, Intel is clinging to the aspect of its business that&nbsp;<em>is&nbsp;<\/em>working out \u2013 namely chips for data centers, whose sales were up 10%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For markets:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>You have to spend money to make money.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Intel hasn\u2019t just been losing market share to its&nbsp;<em>rivals<\/em>&nbsp;for the last couple of years: once-loyal customers including Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple have started designing and producing their own chips too. So to keep from losing anyone else, the chipmaker\u2019s invested $20 billion this year on improving its manufacturing capabilities, and said last week that it\u2019s planning to spend another $28 billion next year. Investors, then, have good reason to be concerned about what that might do to its profit, which might be why they sent Intel\u2019s shares down 10% after the announcement.<br><br><strong><em>Zooming out:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Ce n\u2019est pas bien.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortages of all kinds aren\u2019t doing carmakers any favors either: France\u2019s Renault&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/renault-q3-group-revenues-vehicle-sales-down-confirms-fy21-outlook-quick-facts-2021-10-22\">said<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday that it\u2019s expecting to make 500,000 fewer cars this year than they would\u2019ve done otherwise \u2013 a big jump from its September prediction of 220,000. The company didn\u2019t adjust its profit outlook, mind you \u2013 mostly because it\u2019s hoping to make up for the shortfall by cutting costs and pushing its more profitable
