State Street\u2019s S&amp;P 500 Index ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=spy&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SPY<\/a>)&nbsp;and&nbsp;Invesco\u2019s Nasdaq 100 ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=qqq&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">QQQ<\/a>)&nbsp;led&nbsp;the way higher, each adding 0.8%. iShares Russell 2000 ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=iwm&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IWM<\/a>) added 0.4% and State Street\u2019s Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=dia&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DIA<\/a>)&nbsp;rose&nbsp;0.5%. Both DIA and SPY currently sit less than 1% from fresh highs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While earnings have been largely positive so far, most of the big-name companies have yet to report, and those that have are in industries that are perhaps less affected by supply chain bottlenecks, rising fuel costs, and inflationary concerns. Better-than-expected earnings could still provide downward moves if wider market issues have more of an effect on bottom lines than forecast, or if future guidance is lowered. However, it appears markets have been resilient toward a pullback.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a period of consolidation at the beginning of the month, it appears major averages are beginning to establish a new uptrend, perhaps forecasting a continued move to the upside for SPY and QQQ. Chart&nbsp;watchers will want to observe the price action in these indexes when the larger-weighted stocks begin to report earnings later this month. If traders don\u2019t sell the shares down after earnings reports, it could suggest that the upward trend will continue through the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/1-12-1100x620.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107827 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1100px; aspect-ratio: 1100\/620;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-earnings-good-but-investors-unimpressed\">2\/ <strong>Earnings Good, but Investors Unimpressed&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shares of tobacco giant Phillip Morris (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=pm&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PM<\/a>)&nbsp;fell&nbsp;1.3% despite the company announcing better-than-expected financial results for their fiscal&nbsp;third-quarter. PM reported $1.58 in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/e\/eps.asp?utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">earnings per share (EPS)<\/a>&nbsp;and $8.12 billion in revenue, beating analysts\u2019 forecasts of $1.56 in EPS and $7.93 billion in revenue. PM\u2019s share price fell as the company said that the ongoing global semiconductor shortage could impact sales in the second half of next year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Analysts will be closely watching PM to see if the price action foreshadows what may happen to other companies faced with supply chain constraints, labor shortages, and increased shipping costs. At the moment, PM has fallen behind its sector, as illustrated on the chart below, which compares the recent performance of PM with State Street\u2019s Consumer Staples Sector ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=xlp&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">XLP<\/a>). This sector is positioned to pass rising costs on to customers, making it less affected by inflationary concerns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a smoking hot start to 2021 for PM, rising 20% in the first five months, the stock has fallen 5% this last month while XLP has remained relatively flat. However, it should be noted that PM fell less than it did after last quarter\u2019s earnings, perhaps establishing a higher floor for the months ahead.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"\/campus\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/10\/2-13-1100x617.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-107828 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1100px; aspect-ratio: 1100\/617;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-what-will-tesla-tell-us\">3\/ <strong>What Will Tesla Tell Us?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first major high growth tech companies to announce earnings will be Tesla (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=tsla&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">TSLA<\/a>), which is scheduled to report Wednesday after the market closes. Analysts expect the car maker to report $1.64 in EPS and $13.9 billion in revenue.&nbsp;Investors most likely will focus closely on TSLA\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/tesla-q3-fy2021-earnings-report-preview-5206083?utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vehicle deliveries<\/a>&nbsp;as the company needs to expand production to grow revenue and profits.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Optimistic investors have bid TSLA shares up to a range well above the 20-period moving average. The stock has added 19% in the last month alone. TSLA\u2019s strong performance has helped buoy Invesco\u2019s tech-heavy Nasdaq-100 ETF (QQQ). One of the biggest TSLA bulls has been<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood, whose ARK Innovation ETF (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/markets\/quote?tvwidgetsymbol=arkk&amp;utm_source=chart-advisor&amp;utm_campaign=fwd_chartadvisor&amp;utm_term=25396714&amp;utm_medium=email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ARKK<\/a>)&nbsp;holds&nbsp;nearly 2.5 million shares of the electric car producer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As seen on the chart below, TSLA remains well ahead of both QQQ and ARKK, which have added 2.5% and 3% in the last month, respectively. Phillip Morris beat earnings estimates, but investors still sold the shares after the news.
