{"id":107336,"date":"2021-10-15T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-15T13:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=107336"},"modified":"2023-01-19T17:37:55","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T22:37:55","slug":"above-deck","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/above-deck\/","title":{"rendered":"Above Deck"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Luxury conglomerate LVMH&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/retail-consumer\/luxury-giant-lvmh-says-third-quarter-sales-grew-by-20-2021-10-12\/\">reported<\/a>&nbsp;better-than-expected quarterly earnings earlier this week, as shoppers emerged, pale and blinking, into the humble lifestyle they once knew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There weren\u2019t exactly many benefits to lockdown, but the money plenty of us saved up was certainly one of them. And it looks like fashionistas wasted no time making good use of it last quarter: LVMH\u2019s organic revenue from its fashion and leather goods segment climbed 24% compared to the same time last year. And since the segment contributes almost half of LVMH\u2019s total sales, that helped push&nbsp;<em>overall<\/em>&nbsp;revenue up by 20%. That means the company has made more money in the first nine months of this year than it did during the same period in a pandemic-free 2019. There was one hiccup, though: LVMH warned that increased shipping costs will hurt its profit going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For markets:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Luxury is back in fashion.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic took a serious toll on the luxury industry: it\u2019s hard for shoppers to justify a Louis Vuitton handbag when there\u2019s so much uncertainty ahead, after all. These results, then, are an encouraging sign that the industry\u2019s back on track, which might be why investors sent LVMH\u2019s stock up 3%. And given that they look to the conglomerate for clues about&nbsp;<em>other<\/em>&nbsp;luxury companies, they\u2019re suddenly feeling a lot more confident about Herm\u00e8s\u2019 and Gucci-owner Kering\u2019s updates later this month. That might be why they sent those companies\u2019 shares up too.<br><br><strong><em>The bigger picture:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Equality isn\u2019t the enemy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors were especially keen to know how LVMH has been doing in China: they\u2019ve been worried that the company\u2019s second-biggest market\u2019s efforts toward \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bworldonline.com\/china-eyes-wealth-redistribution-in-push-for-common-prosperity\/\">common prosperity<\/a>\u201d might\u2019ve been impacting how the 1% spend their money. But LVMH said that it hasn\u2019t noticed any changes in shoppers\u2019 behavior so far, which might \u2013 temporarily, at least \u2013 help put investors\u2019 minds at
