{"id":106288,"date":"2021-10-08T09:45:00","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T13:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ibkrcampus.com\/?p=106288"},"modified":"2023-03-01T14:45:47","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T19:45:47","slug":"detour-de-force","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.interactivebrokers.com\/campus\/traders-insight\/securities\/stocks\/detour-de-force\/","title":{"rendered":"Detour De Force"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-going-on\">What&#8217;s going on?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>General Motors (GM)\u00a0said\u00a0earlier this week that it\u2019s planning to double its revenue by 2030, and America\u2019s biggest carmaker knows exactly where it has to go to make that happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-this-mean\">What does this mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Carmakers the world over have been rushing to make electric vehicles (EVs) for an increasingly eco-conscious customer, and GM is no different: the company pledged in June to spend $35 billion on EVs by 2025, as well as to stop making traditional cars completely by 2035. It reckons that shift will boost its EV revenue from $10 billion in 2023 to $90 billion in 2030.<br><br>And it\u2019s not stopping there: GM thinks it\u2019ll earn $80 billion from its other new businesses too, including self-driving cars and subscription services like breakdown cover. Put it all together, and the company\u2019s hoping to hit $280 billion in sales by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-should-i-care\">Why should I care?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>For markets:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>Investors are digging GM.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GM\u2019s stock is up 40% this year versus the US stock market\u2019s 20%, and that rally might not be over anytime soon. For one thing, the introduction of subscription services will boost the firm\u2019s profits, since they boast higher&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.finimize.com\/wp\/definition\/profit-margin\/\">margins<\/a>&nbsp;than cost-heavy car sales do. And for another, the push toward EVs will appeal to an investor base that\u2019s investing more and more in sustainable companies.<br><br><strong><em>The bigger picture:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><em>GM\u2019s taking Tesla\u2019s lead.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GM sold 10 times more cars than Tesla last year, but it\u2019s still valued at 10 times&nbsp;<em>less<\/em>&nbsp;than the EV market leader \u2013 mostly because Tesla is treated as a high-growth tech company rather than a carmaker. GM, then, is reportedly trying to rebrand as a \u201ctech-enabled mobility\u201d firm, and it started by introducing a new in-car software platform on Thursday. But since it could take years to compete with Tesla on its own turf, GM\u2019s planning to move into robotaxis and self-driving delivery services in the meantime \u2013 both areas Tesla hasn\u2019t
