Nvidia Holds The Keys To Anthropic’s Deal With Lambda

The AI startup’s latest compute agreement is yet another deal underwritten by the superstar chipmaker-turned-financier.

What’s going on here?

Anthropic just signed a $35 billion contract with AI-cloud provider Lambda – and once again, Nvidia is the middleman.

What does this mean?

Anthropic’s scrambling to lock in compute ahead of its rumoured $2 trillion IPO. But without an “investment-grade” credit rating, the AI startup can’t easily borrow enough cash to bankroll its infrastructure build. Enter Nvidia.

  • The chipmaker was already invested in both Anthropic and Lambda: a neocloud that rents processing power to AI firms. Under this deal, Lambda will supply Anthropic’s compute – using Nvidia’s chips, obvi – and Nvidia will hold the lease on a new $20-billion, 700-megawatt data center to house the hardware.
  • Lambda gets a big customer, Anthropic gets compute without signing a giant lease, and Nvidia sells more hardware while bolstering two investments. Everybody wins… for now.

Why should I care?

The bigger picture: Nvidia’s AI empire.

Nvidia isn’t just a chipmaker anymore: it’s an AI powerbroker. Last week alone, Nvidia invested $3.5 billion in Taiwan’s MediaTek, tying the chip designer more closely to its own tech, and struck a deal to put $1 billion into AI startup Poolside. Not to mention the extra $6 billion Nvidia kicked in to borrow Poolside’s engineers.

⚠️ Playing both banker and landlord – while deepening its own chip, networking gear, and model offerings – gives Nvidia a formidable advantage over its rivals. But that means an awful lot of AI risk now sits on its balance sheet.

Zooming in: Nvidia’s name doesn’t guarantee a win.

Lambda, Nscale, and Crusoe – all Nvidia-backed AI cloud providers – are lining up public listings. But Nvidia’s cash and credibility may only get them so far: investors are judging them on debt loads, future funding needs, and contract quality.

  • Just look at CoreWeave and Nebius. Nvidia backs both neoclouds, but Nebius’s share price is up more than 130% this year, while debt-laden CoreWeave’s rose just 7%.
