Advisor Account Checklist

1. Complete the Advisor Electronic Application
When you select the Open an Account button, you will be asked to establish a Username and Password at the beginning of the process so that all the information you enter will remain secure. While most customers will complete their application in a fully electronic fashion, we are sometimes required to receive paper documents which should be forwarded to the addresses listed under Contact Us/Document Submission Information on the IB website.

2. Open Trading Account
You will be asked if you would like to open a trading account for your own personal trading. You will then be guided through a number of screens related to this trading account (Note: The master account is only used to collect fees).

3. Fund Your Account
If you opened an advisor trading account, or if you are funding your master account, send a check* (with your deposit instruction form, or your account number written on the check) or wire (call or visit your bank to initiate) as specified in your deposit instructions to IB. Electronic Funds Transfer (ACH), Broker-to-Broker Transfer (ACAT), and IB Internal Transfers will automatically transfer. If we do not receive your funds for your trading account in 45 days from approval it will be closed.

4. Application Review
We will review your application for approval once your entire application has been completed. Your application is complete once there are no outstanding application tasks within Finish Application, located in the Login drop-down list in the upper right corner of the IB homepage. Sometimes after you have completed the application we require additional steps. You will be notified by email and within Login/Complete Application if this is the case.

5. Application Review Results
You will be notified by email and within Login/Complete Application of the results of our application review. Fully completed applications will be processed within 48 business day hours under normal business conditions.

6. Trade Advisor Account
If you opened an advisor trading account, and we have received your funds, you may begin to trade. Your funds will be deposited into your master account, and you must transfer funds from your master account to your trading account through Account Management in order to trade. Funds received by 16:00 ET are available for trading the next business day under normal business circumstances. The latest status of your deposit or transfer may be found under Funds Status in Login/Account Management.

7. Submit an Application for Each Client
There are three ways to submit an application for a client; electronically, electronically with paper signature or by paper. All three methods are accessible from Account Management.

  • Fully electronic (for fastest processing). You send an invitation to your client to complete an electronic application online. You can also create client account templates in Account Management to save and re-use application information for new client accounts.

  • Electronic with paper signature. You will electronically complete an application for your client under Login/Account Management. At the end of the process you will print the application and send it to your client for signature. The client will fill in deposit instructions, a security questions and answer, sign the application and send it to IB Account Processing.

  • Paper. Print out a paper application under Login/Account Management. Send it your client to complete and sign. The client will send the completed application to IB Account Processing

You may log into Account Management at any time to see the status of your clients' applications.

8. Client Funding
If the client is sending a check* they should include it with their application. For wires, the client should call or visit their bank to initiate. Electronic Funds Transfer (ACH), Broker-to-Broker Transfer (ACAT), and IB Internal Transfers will automatically transfer. If we do not receive your client's funds in 45 days from approval the account will be closed.

9. Client Application Review Results
You will be notified by email and within Login/Account Management of the results of your client's application. In addition, your client will be notified by postal mail of the results of their application. If a client email address was included as part of the client application, a client Username and Password will be included in this letter. Fully completed client applications will be processed within 48 business day hours under normal business conditions. Paper applications will be processed within 36 business day hours of the receipt of the application under normal business conditions.

10. Trade Client Account
If we have received your client funds, you may begin to trade for your client. Funds received by 16:00 ET are available for trading the next business day under normal business circumstances. The latest status of your deposit or transfer for your client's account may be found under Funds Status in Account Management.

*Checks or bank drafts are not available for IB Canada customers.
